Bug (river), river in eastern Europe, rising in Ukraine, east of L'viv. The river flows north, forming the border between Ukraine and Poland from Chervonohrad (Chervonograd) northward, and between Poland and Belarus as far as the city of Brest. Then the river turns west, joining the Wisla (Vistula) River near Warsaw. The total course of the river is 860 km (530 mi), and it is navigable below Brest. Canals connect the Bug with the Dnieper and Neman (Nyoman) rivers (MSN Encarta).
