In the city of Evora, Portugal, stands the 'Capela dos Ossos' or the Chapel of the Bones.

In many bone chapels, or catacombs, the bones are strewn around with little purpose. At the Capela dos Ossos, the purpose of the bones is carved into the entryway, "Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos" or "Our bones that are here await yours!" The 16th-century monks who built the Chapel of Bones wanted you to contemplate the rather transient nature of life, and they used a macabre sense of humor in bringing the point home.

Not for the faint-hearted.

The building itself is quite run down, when we visited there were two beggar ladies dressed like nuns sitting in the doorway. They were almost in the way and had a scary look about them, so we gave a couple of Euros so as not to be cursed !

(Their dog is in the shot, it just wanders about looking mean and hungry).

Nicely tiled town square in front of the building.

PP work was minor, slight crop, tweaked curves a little, resized and sharpened.

Thanks for looking,

Neil.
