Tiles (azulejos) in the city of Sintra. Based on the paint “Fado” (1910) by Jose Malhoa (1855-1933). Fado music is the heart of the Portuguese soul. It is arguably the oldest urban folk music in the world. Some say it came as a dance from Africa in the XIX century and was adopted by the poor on the streets of Lisbon. Or perhaps it started at sea as the sad, melodic songs coaxed from the rolling waves by homesick sailors and fishermen. By the early XX century, fado had become a fixture in the everyday life of Lisbon’s working class. It was played for pleasure but also to relieve the pain of life. Skilled singers known as fadistas performed at the end of the day and long into the night. Fado was the earthy music of taverns and brothels and street corners in Alfama and Mouraria, the old poor sections of Lisbon. The essential element of fado music is “saudade” (nostalgia), a Portuguese word that translates roughly as longing, or nostalgia for unrealized dreams. For Portuguese emigrants fado is an expression of homesickness for the place they left behind.

dear Mikolaj Cava,
of course the blue picture on tiles are wonderful, but
more over your composition of colors (marin blue, pale cream and deep blue of tiles) is excellent.
we have scarcely chance to listen Fado music in Japan, but I heard the nostalgic essence of Fado soul in the cinema of Portugal.
the song comes out from this picture.
thank you,
Akihisa

looks a cover from cd.. nice shot of this painting wall.. good work again, Mikolaj.. :)

regards, terry

Hi again Mikolaj!
Sharp and detailed capture of this architectural detail, fine artwork o the wall. Simpl composed, but it's quite effective bythe inclusion of the blue stripe on the left. Good job again!

Kristof
