«Ribatejo» is a region of Portugal located at north of Lisbon, making border with Spain.

The «Ribatejo» man is to Portugal what "cowboys" are to America.

The man in the photo dresses the traditional male suit of the «Ribatejo» and rides his horse («Lusitano horse») taking care of the cattle: cows and bulls.

However, slowly, this linking with the land through animals goes disappearing; the time of horses is yielding place to the machine and artificial intelligence.

The same succeeds with the innocence … and with the soul of mankind.

I’ve been distracted… everything has passed so fast…

I miss the time of the horses…

hi Teresa

This is a fine TL post about a fast losing tradition which in modern times is hard to catch up with young people migrating to cities for a living. Although you have shot him from behind as a different portrait, the imagination with the note is well provided to tell a good story, something you are very good at. Great work.

tfs, bill

Boa noite Teresa,

Sergio

Hi Teresa,
Again a special post from you!
I am always agreeably surprised with the way you build your images. I think that each photo you presented us ressembles at a great poster we could see in the hall of cinema!
Your choice to show us the back of this Ribatejo man in front of a wall is relevant because this keeps nobility and mystery halo at this way of life, and, in the same time, we can understand how the end of this culture is ineluctable.
Bravo! Annie

Hello Teresat,
I can't see the Ribatejo man 's face ,it is as well because just so as the traditional way of life he and his ancestors have evolved in slowly vanishes , progress has simply made the man aware of this , assessing this he knows out of no doubt this is tragic and has become inevitable : The traditional life of the Ribatejo man is dying....
A great story Teresat ,i sense that progress is just too present in our lives now with computers, cell phones and the like , another problem is, as Bill stated in his comment , the migration of the youths to the cities .Truthful, i am afraid ...
Thanks for sharing and bringing up the subject ,a great and sad story at the same time , well presented ,
Carol

Hi Teresat,

Your photo and note are that perfect alignment of head and eye and heart.

I like that the photo treats your subject with respect and mystery at the same time. You are lucky to still have "Ribatejo" in Portugal, and luckier still to have captured this portrait here on film so well.

I, too, grew up in the time of horses (in New Mexico). Now our ranch is a subdivision of houses and the cowboys eat at McDonalds.

(BTW, the Rio Bravo clip was priceless! Thanks for finding and sharing!)

Bom dia Teresa,

superb portrait of Ribatejo man. When I read the words in your note and when I look at the photo, I realize that you couldn't have chosen better composition. You are talking about times and habits that are disappearing and this image shows just that...different way of life, turning the back on us, slowly becoming only faceless memory...

Time changes all...people, habits... *The same succeeds with the innocence … and with the soul of mankind.* You couldn't have said it better.

Have a nice day.

Dear Teresa -
This is quite a wonderful portrait - so artfully composed! The lighting is incredible, with lots of shadows but with soft light, warm tones and a perfect background. all combine to create a nostalgic feel and some mystery as well. I love that you can see just a hint of the side of his face. Very memorable image - a truly great one.

As soon as I saw the hat I knew what it was before reading your note.
Like the gheishas of Japan each country looses a bit of its customs to be replaced by modern times.
A good shot and I especially like the back composition.

I have to admit - I first went to check the link and then played the song on youtube for 20 minutes, again and again and again...
=)
(I always loved Dean Martin, booze or not)
like Franco says, even if we see only his back, this image talks to us about this man, these men and their horses, and something that's slowly disappearing. to me, the element in this photo that makes it what it is, is the tilt of his head. the way he seems to lean on one side. the oblique position of the hat. it's the sweet, melancholy body language.
often good photos are made of single details frozen in a perfect movement. and this photo belongs to them.
sleep well my dear teresa =)

I love this shot..the composition..the lighting , the details...this is excellent.

Hi Teresat,
Very significant shot. I like your pessimistic note, too. As for my country, I am happy that after collapse of the Soviet Union horses re-appeared in Ukraine. Long live expensive fuel!

ciao Teresa..
where i look around me.. i look at a world of full stupidy.. here and there, at Ribatejo.. it doesnt matter where.. and it's not a question of modernity..
people are not more able to recognize themself..
we are "the machines".. the simply executors.. the artificial unintelligents..
everyone ignores.. the reason.. which is "the reason" for our actions?!?
money? sex? the search of happiness? and why are we doing.. everyday.. exactly.. the opposite actions to reach it?!?
every man.. is slave.. until he does not learn.. to think with his own brain!!
we are not comunicating with ourself anymore..
men are not so different to horses.. both are made.. to run!!
interesting the back pov.. an effective idea.. full of mood.. and full of legend taste..
faces of people are all desappering.. everyone is anonymous in his sadness solitude..
no more heros.. no more old cowboys.. unchangeable and etern! ;))
many thanks, my dear..
ciao Marco
