Nesta imagem apresento outro pormenor do percurso da "Levada do Norte".
Os jovens na imagem são meus alunos participantes nesta caminhada. Constitue uma oportunidade muito interessante, fora do contexto da sala de aula, para tomar contacto com a fauna e a flora da região, sob o lema:"Conhecer para preservar".
«Fazer uma Levada significa percorrer os trilhos ao longo das levadas. "Levada" deriva da palavra "levar". Podemos dizer que uma levada é um mini-canal que leva a água.
A maoiria dos Madeirenses vive na costa, junto ao mar. Os nossos antepassados eram aventureiros e ansiavam por descobertas. Eram também agricultores, que, há muitos séculos atrás, viram que o solo vulcânico da ilha e o clima eram ideais à produção de cana de açúcar, banana e vinha. Contudo havia um problema: a maior parte da água da chuva caída nas montanhas a norte e não na vertente sul, mais quente, onde as primeiras canas e vinhas foram plantadas. Decidiram então criar um sistema único (isto no séc.XVI) de canais de irrigação, feito pela mão do Homem, aos quais chamaram Levadas. Rasgaram as montanhas, escavaram túneis...e, talvez por instinto, calcularam uma pequena inclinação para que a água podesse chegar aonde era necessária.
Parte da rede, que no total tem varios quilómetros (2500 kms), diz-se ter sido feita muito antes de existir qualquer tipo estradas para automóveis.
Uma das mais antigas profissões da ilha é a de Levadeiro, o homem responsável por abrir e fechar as comportas e pela manutenção geral das Levadas. Actualmente os agricultures e produtores pagam a sua água não por volume, mas por hora, pagam a "pena".
Felizmente para os amantes da natureza estas Levadas proporcionam espantosos e inesquecíveis passeios pela ilha da Madeira.»
