Monument to the first crossing of the South Atlantic.

Our friend António make one photo of this plane in the museum you can see this photo here Limassol

On 30 March 1922, Navy commanders Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral, took-off in their Rolls-Royce engine flying boat Fairey F III-D, named "Lusitânia", to carry out the first crossing of the South Atlantic. The aviators were using for the first time a navy sextant where an artificial horizon had been fitted in order to measure the stars height, a revolutionary improvement in a time when even radio aids were non-existent.The first leg of the journey took them to the Canary Islands without any major incidents apart from the excessive fuel consumption which would seriously endanger the success of their mission. In the second leg of the trip, they covered 850 miles and reached the Island of St Vincent in Cape Vert where the aircraft was repaired. On 17 April they left the Port of Praia at St. Tiagus Island en route to the American continent and when, approaching the small rocky islands off the Brazilian coast they had to ditch the plane in the sea due to fuel shortage. Rough seas finally damaged the aircraft beyond repair but the Portuguese government, encouraged by the feat, sent another Fairey flying boat. Shortly after taking-off on 11 May, Coutinho and Cabral were again forced to ditch the plane in the sea close to the rocks and were eventually rescued by a British cargo after spending nine hours in the water. Finally, on 5 June, flying a Fairey F III, named "Santa Cruz 17", the two commanders were able to resume the journey and arrived in Rio de Janeiro on 17 June 1922.

The first crossing of the South Atlantic had been achieved and, also for the first time, using an instrument which enabled an aeroplane’s position to be determined by methods of astronomic navigation when flying out of sight of land.

Ola fernando

Wonderful graphism of the dark plane against the orange sky. The sharp silhouette is very effective. Parabens!

great comp, love the effect and the colours and all the desail, (*_*)

Interesting graphical treatment. The note was also informative.

Can give an explaination very scientific why i consider that orange fit so well that shadow? Remain Sunset of gentle trip over a lake, fires of the war in the begin of aviation or sepia tones of a past time? But i like the POV of that plane! That's great!

Olá Fernando,
Que bonito efeito de um feito heróico para a época.
Muito bem captada, o ângulo está perfeito a sugerir que já está em pleno voo.
Parabêns meu amigo, gostei...!!!
Um abraço,
José

Hi Fernando,

Awesome colors, the sky looks filled with gold. I like the POV with the plane being almost just a silhouette and with the sun rays that we can see on the right. Great shot.
Luc

Hi Fernando. You bring me about 65 years back in my life. I am 74.
I remember when I was playing outside in our yard with my brothers and earing a plane coming, looking up and seeing a four wings plane in the sky. What a nice souvenir. Thank you Fernando.
Beautifukl BG. Very good effect. Good shot and POV.

Hi Fer,
this one is so impressive really!
orange is my favourite so i love this shot 'cause of perfect orange at the background and perfect composition with it!
it should be fantastic to fly with this plane in the this beautiful sky!
tfs!
regards..
zey. :)

Orange clor is great here again. Its a great balanced composition. So sharpen and sun ray of light upright completes your composition perfectly. And i think it should be so great to fly with that plane!!! :)

Olá.. Mais um bocado e ele já estava no ar novamente... A composição está muito boa, muito geometrica devido às pequenas linhas, a cor também está muito boa dá mesmo a impressão que está a voar contra o por do sol...

Parabéns...
