SITARU Monastery

The monastery was founded by Pavel Greceanu, a former Chancellor at the court of Mihai the Brave Voivode, and by his wife Elena in 1627.
The church, which was destroyed by several earthquakes, was restored and thoroughly consolidated many times (in 1750, 1860 and 1977).
The original architectural concept of the holy establishment remained unchanged after the execution of the church towers, which were completely reconstructed.
Painted in 1752, the church is famous for its frescoes, which were executed by a group of priests from Brasov (Father Dima, Father Neacsa, and others). The frescoes are highly appreciated by the experts in the field, being considered as valuable as the frescoes inside the church of the Voronet Monastery. There were reconditioned more than two centuries later - more specifically within the years 1989 and 1990.
Special mention should be made of the fact the resident monastic of this holy establishment are vegetarians, as well as of the fact that the nocturnal religious services, are performed from midnight until 3:00 a.m.
In 2000, within the monastic grounds there was also erected a new construction which was designed to accommodate several monastic cells and a library. The monastery provides accommodation facilities for incoming visitors.

Wonderful photo Anca, intersting note you wrote, so as you know I like to visit old monastery's and in my village one of the oldest monastery in my country.

Foarte frumoasa perspectiva... imi aminteste de tripticile ortodoxe. Imi place si lumina, estompata, culorile (probabil ca ai fotografiat dupa masa). Si pragul de sus e foarte inedit, deosebit de ce am mai vazut pina acum. Numai bine, pupici! :) Alex
