dear friends, I think we all asked from time to time about the art. what is the art? what makes it ART? the artist or the one who see it? the subject or the interpretation of the subject? the WHAT or the HOW? hmmm the eternal questions... and the answers are?... for everybody I think there are different answers. one sees in art only imagination, another one sees only creation, another sees only reality, another one can see only the story behind. can all have right?

let's see, for example, this image. is a country wc shooted last mounth near Bucharest. is this art? if yes, why, if no, why? what do you think, why I taken this image? for the colours? for the subject? for the meaning? or for the light? or maybe I just pressed the shutter, eh?

the image is almost the original, only a little correction of the levels, curves and USM - no crop. so no interpretation "after" the shot.

so, why I pressed the shutter, I wanted to produce art or just amusing myslef? and, IF I only saw this compo and NOT pressing the shutter, it will be the same? is the beauty in the eyes of the viewer? I shoulded keep it for me? what do you think?

oh, so many questions and so complicated ones... and now, the last serie: is the art connected with the artist, or maybe the art is something floating in the universe, in the kingdom of Pure Ideas? is this image what I saw in that day, saw only by me and only in that moment, or is an image which anybody coulded produce, or an image which existed there and not needed be saw by anyone? is this image ME or just a something produced automatically by a camera? is the act of seing and perceiving an image important in photography? is the art of well knowing the technicall parameters important in producing art? if anybody of you were there, you think you coulded produce something similar? I can tell you, I was there with another friend, very good photographer, who not even saw this strange corner in this strange courtyard. he was attracted by another subjects.

so, you thought well? you have the answers? I think everybody sincere has his own answers. so, the answers for me are: one picture can be produced just by one person. if I see something like this, I take my camera, I put it on a tripod, I am prepearing the aperture and the shutter speed, iso and everything and... in that very moment, someone is killing me and take the picture prepeared by me, to which one belongs the picture?

thanks for your time!

You put the problem very well.
Art is simply the expression of ourselfes, and if we want to go deeper, Art exists, and some of us have the "antens" to recieve it.

The picture belongs to the one that saw it, prepared it etc.
The OTHER it's just a remote control with human form, to put it very very plastic.....

PS.ceru arata mai bine in orginal, pararea mea:)

Hello Anca,
Lovely sky and a beautiful colour palette!
Interesting composition, where the elements are well balanced and adding dynamics to the scenery...
Mind provoking!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Anca,

Amicalement
Pascal

I think that Art is the ability to make someone else share our feelings and emotions through words, music, visual aids and by all means Photography.
The desolate feeling that one receives in looking at the scene that you have captured is a result of the art that you have expressed in capturing this picture.
Someone else may not feel desolation, but be uplifted by the beautiful blue and white sky and also this is a result of art.
But thank you for making us relect on this subject.

This is art and story-telling:) Not only did you see this scene and recognize it for all its real and imaginary elements, but you captured it with your camera and shared it here. It contains more than visual features... there are potential stories and curiosities for the viewer to interpret. This makes it especially memorable! Super!

Hi Anca
Your thumbnail and question in the title made me look further. Your notes have created thoughts in my head. Your image to me is what the camera recorded when you pressed the shutter as are many of my own photographs. When I press the shutter on my camera I do so for various reasons. To record the moment and to create a pleasing image that others will enjoy. Thank you for your upload today.
Mike

Dear Anca,

I think Art is in the preconception in the brain, the 'seeing' of potential, whether it be in beauty or not.
Without the original idea what's a camera but a box with some glass, an inanimate instrument that can only do what the person holding it wants it to( hihi, or not…). What’s a piece of canvas some brushes and some coloured paste without the painter? What’s a piece of wood or marble without the visionary sculptour?
We see, hear, make and experience things differently, so many emotions, some feel it… others don't, that's why it so controversial!
I prefer to call myself a Creative photographer, looking for the less obvious, different angles but above all, EMOTION!
But it will always be the ‘brain’ that will be the creator of anything, all the rest are tools to help you materialise it. Beethoven’s music would be nothing but lines and dots and crochets on sheets of paper if the instruments had not been there to play out the music, or would he not have written the music at all?
The chicken or the egg?

IMHO... thanx, M, (*_*)

merhaba dear anca
beautiful composition.very good sky and clouds.well done my friend.
best regards.

If you ask me, I would have taken the same picture! Just because it is a bit weird, but mainly because the colours are absolutely gorgeous. The fact that it is an outhouse doesn't matter: I posted a photo of the men's room yesterday, just because I found it beautiful when I opened the door.

Be free. Shoot what you like. The fact is, you have developed your own style, as we all have. Go girl!

Hello Anca,

Art - I think Magda hit it right on the head. Any idea percieved to have potential......
And it is within that potential where the artist expresses.... It is irrelevant if anyone else sees or feels the same. It is only a bonus when they do. If an artist creates based on the feelings of others then I think that the artist becomes a tool rather than in creative control free to express. Expression is replaced by production.

As far as the photograph... Fantastic!!! I look for scenes like this everyday. Yes, I would have taken the shot. But we are different people with different perceptions. The subjects would all remain in the composition but my chosen point of view would be different. As well as each of us 'seeing' different potentials or maybe not.

Art and the artist are within us, around us everywhere are only the tools to express and create. Some just have a greater ability to tap into this and use it better than others do.

IMHO the one who perceives the idea is the one with the rights. It would be like taking someone else's idea for a book, music or play and finishing it before they did. Or like stealing plans for an invention and marketing it before the original.

You had to have an idea that I would love this shot Anca. It opens so many stories and thoughts. The sky could not have been any better for a shot like this. Absolutely beautiful evening light playing with the long shadows and giving depth and texture to the image.

Well done Anca! Both the artwork and the thoughts.

Love and Peace Always,
Kevin

Never forget the greatest artist of all!
The ONE who perceived and created all of this...

Art is ... Abstracting the Reality and Time :)))

I don't know what art is, but I do know what makes my eye feel relaxed. So, somehow I am not much preocupied by the upfront white chair. Rather, its that wide flat horizon that looks so inviting. Love the colors.

Good shot Anca

Da, idee foarte buna, arta e a celui care o "vede" si o concepe.
Fotografia e interesanta, imi plac culorile si compozitia. Bravo pentru nota de sustinere!

Very great pic!
The meaning is very deep.
Love the colors, the depthness, the textures, the "ingredients"...

Hi Anca!
What is the art?I don`t know and I think nobody can tell you the right definition. The art is Leonardo`s Mona Lisa and Warhol`s packet of soup.I think is great to asking and serching the meaning of art.
Cheers.

Art ... ability to express your inner self, regardless of how bizzare and strange that expression may be, but also find an audience who can appreciate and understand it.

So, if someone can consider a picture of some chairs and a lavatory room outside as nonsense, the other can find a beauty in the sky and colors of the field and call it a masterpiece...

Katya

i would press the shutter as well if i see this anca :)
if you break this down...the colors, contrast and simplicity makes it a good photo :) but in the end our eyes tells our brain this is a nice photo...so we press the shutter :)

wow! asta-i tare de tot. serios. felicitari.

It took me some time to turn about this photo! It has visual impact especially because of the cloudy sky - stunning coloring and good geometry – but the feeling is like biting from an appetizing apple and finding it from wax. It is like a contradiction and not because of the closet and the plastic chairs. It is like a gap; may be too much sky which catches attention or may be something is missing…

On my taste I see this photo in this way: horizontal preferable, 1/3 sky, b&w and a white pig in foreground.

Regarding “garrulousness” about art it has something relative – to be or to not be on the same wave length – and something unequivocal – like in sex – natural or perverse. And third, something which depends of culture kind, a devilish; when the human haven’t to choice they eat what they bring or what they are teach to eat…

Hi Anca,

Art to me is what I consider as an art... no matter what other said... is what I see... everyone see things differently, some see beauty from a stone.. some see beauty on a diamond... so it is depend on individual... :) Eye of the Beholder is what I say... :)

Like in this photo, I can point out the good stuff... rich colours, beautiful sky, nice lighting that create very nice shadow...etc..etc... all this I believe is what you think is an art that's why you took it, that's why you took it with this angle... to you, this is an art... it is your creation, to me, it is a beautiful photo.. just like what Magda said..."EMOTION".

Cheers,
Sweety
p.s I hope you understand what I am trying to said.. :)

What is art? At some academic level there may be an answer, I am not academically skilled in art and so cannot even begin to guess at such an answer.

To me art has two sides. One is simply an expression of yourself (who you are, where you feel you fit in). What does a photo of a toilet say about you? (Perhaps I shouldn't go there - I don't really know you). Besides, I would need thousands of pictures to build up even a superficial impression of who you are unless I know you outside of your art. I may not know what you mean, but I recognised that you mean to say something of yourself. To me that is art.

Photos are not always about art. I have thousands of photos that are technically adequate in my estimation of my skills, but I don't think of them as art. They are merely aids to remind me of my experiences. But if I were to show the world, through TL, any one of those photos I risk begin considered at artist for showing you something of myself.

The other side of art is to provoke thoughts or feelings in someone else. I can say this photo made me laugh at first. Just imagine - a queue for such a remote toilet - who'd have thought you needed seats to wait to use an outhouse? I also see a technically well taken photo - nice use of thirds, colour and lack of distractions, and think to myself the photographer is not without talent. Finally I read your note and it provokes me to think about these things I speak of; things I have never really dwelt upon before. So you have povoked novel thoughts in a complete stranger. To me that is art also.
