Teguise the old capital of Lanzarote.
The typical streets and houses all in white.

Just metres from the coast, you come across the placid Villa de Teguise (village of Teguise), once the ancient capital of the island. With over 500 years of history, which the town has proudly preserved, Teguise was declared Conjunto Arquitectónico Histórico-Artķstico (an architecturally historic artistic site) in the 1980“s.

Today it serves as an escape from the bustle of the city and a reminder of the glory of yesterday.

In 1418, Maciot de Bethencourt first demarcated the town's boundaries making Teguise the first urban centre in the Canary Islands. Its domestic architecture can still be seen in the beautifully restored palaces and stately homes such as the Spķnola Palace. Among the religious buildings are Ntra. Sra. de Guadalupe church and the convents of St. Domingo and San Francisco. And on top of Guanapay volcano sits the old castle of Santa Bįrbara.

Teguise also offers its visitors great opportunities for shopping. Not to be missed is the famous outdoor market held every Sunday morning when the village turns itself into a grand bazaar! It's a great mix of the traditional and modern.

Teguise is a Canarian municipality in the north-central and the eastern portion of the island of Lanzarote in the Las Palmas province in the Canary Islands The population is 14,214 (ISTAC, 2003), its density is 53.84/km² and the area is 263.98 km². The town population is around 3,000. The population doubling time is about 20 years and the growth between 2001 and 2003 was at 10.14% It is located north of Arrecife on a main highway of LZ1 and south of Harķa. The main industry are agriculture and tourism. The Atlantic Ocean is to the northwest and east and the mountains are around the municipality.

Farmlands dominate the rest of the municipality. César Manrique was born in the area. The insect of the island is the cochineal which carmine, a dye is extracted from.

The municipality also comprises a number of neighbouring islands including Graciosa, Alegranza, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Montańa Clara.

PL

I love the colors in this. I think I would like to see a bit more of the blue sky above the building, because it looks so nice with the green doors. Nice shot!
