St Mary’s Cathedral, Visby
Visby’s wonderful Cathedral is both a living place of worship and a cultural treasure. Construction of the Cathedral began in the late 12th century, funded by levies on German ships using the port of Visby. In 1225, the Cathedral was consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since 1572 it has been the Diocesan seat, and in 2003 it also became the cathedral for the Church of Sweden Abroad.

The Cathedral’s many sights include an original 13th-century image of Christ, a replica of the 13th-century Visby Madonna, modern stained-glass windows and some superb organs.

Services are held daily throughout the year. Easter is a very special time in Visby, with ecumenical services and processions bringing alive the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection. In summer, the Cathedral is a “centre of pilgrimage” for regular members of the congregation, visiting tourists and summer residents. This is evident in Medieval Week (Week 32), when St Mary’s becomes the ecclesiastical centre for thousands of visitors re-creating the Middle Ages. The summer evening concerts on Wednesdays present a wide variety of music, and the annual Organ Festival (Week 33) features organists from Sweden and abroad. Guided tours of the Cathedral take place several times a week in summer and are also available for groups by prior arrangement.
