Unknown Fruits ???

Friday Theme 2008/05/30 "Fruit"

THANK YOU VERY MUCH SWEETY - PUFFY!!!

The RAMBUTAN(IPA: [ramˈbu.t̪ɑn], Nephelium lappaceum) is a medium-sized tropical tree in the family Sapindaceae, and the fruit of this tree. It is probably native to Southeast Asia, although its precise natural distribution is unknown. It is closely related to several other edible tropical fruits including the Lychee, Longan and Mamoncillo. It is believed to be native to the Malay Archipelago.[1]. Rambutan in Indonesian or Malayan literally means hairy or hairy fuit caused by the 'hair' that covers this fruit. In Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, it is known as mamón chino. There is a second species regularly for sale at Malay markets which is known as "wild" rambutan. It is a little smaller than the usual red variety and is colored yellow.

The HORNED MELON, also called MELANO, African horned cucumber or melon, jelly melon, hedged gourd, English tomato, or KIWANO, is the vine Cucumis metuliferus and is of African origin. It is grown for its fruit, which looks like an oval melon with horns. The fruit of this plant is edible, but it is used as often for decoration as for food. Though the horned melon is native to the Kalahari desert, it is now grown in California and New Zealand.

The dark-green pulp of this unique fruit has a delightfully refreshing flavour profile evocative of bananas, cucumbers, limes, and passionfruit. Its versatility in desserts is shown in its use as a topping for cheesecakes, flans, mousses, soufflés, sundaes, and pavlova. It can also be an ingredient in smoothies.

hi Zorica

Very interesting assortment of fruits, the hairy red ones looking quite similar to what we locally called 'rambutans' with white flesh inside around a large seed.

Nice colors to make up a basket of fruits for your post.

tfs, bill

Another creative idea for this theme. Well done.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hello Zorica,

These 'unknown' fruits look so interesting! I am one of those people who always has to have a little taste of something new, or different!

You have pictured them very well with crisp, clear images. I will have to check if they are available in the U.K!

Kind regards,
