[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Many years ago on a September 19 afternoon I was born in a hospital - 500m from River Rhine. I grew up here and there but never moved more than 5 KM from the Rhine. When I was young I often played on the banks of that stream and I can still remember the smell.
It was a chemical, strong smell and although the water looked clear and only a little grey and there were still some fish and crabs living in the water, it was not allowed to drink it or even go swimming there. My father, who grew up in the 1930's often told me that he and his friends were swimming in the Rhine every summer and entered the freightships when they passed their hometown upstream in order to take a short ride and then jumped into the river which took them downstream again. Sometimes one of his friends didn't arrive anymore and the river took the body along his journey to the sea.
Now I am living in a place which is only 200 m away from river Rhine. The smell has disappeared since years and you are allowed to swim at certain areas and fishermen can eat their catch - but the water is still grey.
This year I travelled upstream and followed the Rhine to its origin in Switzerland. It took me 40+ years and I was very pleased and surprized to see the clear water and the blue colour of river Rhine there on a sunny day.

Hi Thomas, what a place to live - your notes are very interesting, and I am so pleased the water is now safer to swim in. Our beaches here aren't always good to swim in now, especially after storms...
Beautiful view, and the colours are good too,
TFS

Salut Thomas,
Bon anniversaire ;o)
J'aime beaucoup, tu as réussi à capter le bleu si particulier aux rivières de montagne.
C'est magnifique avec ces sommets sans nuage.
Bonne journée

Karèle

Oh Thomas, would not we all love to have the Rhine be as beautiful and pure as in it's country of origin.
Love the way you can see the pebbles under water - love to look at this picture a lot.
Thanks so much for sharing this moment and your note.
