one more photo from Château de Chillon, Switzerland
The wonderfully preserved 13th-century castle is set at the edge of Lake Geneva near Montreux.
Château de Chillon (shee-yon) has never been damaged or destroyed — it's always been inhabited and maintained. Its oldest fortifications dating to the 11th century, the castle was expanded by the Savoy family in the 13th century, when this was a prime location: at a crossroads of a major trade route between England and France and Rome. It was the Savoys' fortress and residence, with four big halls (a major status symbol) and impractically large lakeview windows. |
