I took this shot while hiking in the Pont-de-Nant nature preserve in the Alps above the town of Bex. It is a beautiful place. This young tree was not behind the rock; it was growing right out of the rock.

As you can see, the fog in the mountains was quite dense; there are still patches of snow and the cloud ceiling had engulfed the mountaintop. Clear visibility was only about 10-12 meters.

I had never attempted shooting in heavy fog before and it was a challenge. Exposure was tricky to balance between the dark forest and the foggy but much brighter sky. Some things I learned about shooting in fog, which most of you probably already know:

* A misty background can be nice, but you need to be close to your subject or the entire photo will be a smeary mess.

* For the same reason, a long telephoto shot is useless. No matter how you try to magnify your subject, you still have to account for all of the water vapor in the air between you and what you are trying to shoot. My telephoto lens never made it out of my bag during this excursion.

* As with all limited light environments, a tripod is useful. Unfortunately I decided not to lug mine along because I did not want to be burdened with it on the steep trails. Bad decision.

Despite my inexperience, I think I managed to get a few o.k. shots. If you have suggestions about how to go about shooting in fog, I would love to hear them. Cheers -

Sandy

The fog is the mood-maker in this beautiful scene, and there is somehow still a lovely light behind the young tree that definitely features it well. Some friends and I were once discussing how trees can be found growing in the most unlikely places, such as rock crevices...and we decided that they don't know any better:) A good example of the saying "bloom where you are planted". Anyway, this shot is very appealing and refreshing, with that special sense of peace to be found in quiet natural places. Superb:)

oh, what a beautiful mood! reminds me our Tatry (Tatra Mountains, located on Polish/Slovak border); this tree, although hiding in the fog, is perfectly clear - well done,
