Ok this is completely plagarised and not at all my words...

Donnington Castle was built by its original owner, Richard Abberbury the Elder, under a licence granted by Richard II in 1386. The surviving castle gatehouse dates from this time. The castle was subsequently bought by Thomas Chaucer, the son of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, as a residence for his daughter Alice, who later became Duchess of Suffolk. This family later fell out with the Tudor monarchs, and the castle became a Royal property. Both King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I visited Donnington Castle and the latter wanted to live there during her imprisonment by her sister, Queen Mary I, but this was not allowed.

By the time the English Civil War broke out, the castle was owned by the Parliamentarian Packer family but after the First Battle of Newbury it was taken for the King and held by Sir John Boys. Despite being besieged for most of the war, the castle succeeded in guarding the major routeways from London to the West Country and Oxford to Southampton, and during the Second Battle of Newbury, the castle was able hold off the Parliamentary attackers. Finally, after an eighteen month siege, the garrison surrendered and were allowed to rejoin Royalist forces in Wallingford.

In 1646 Parliament voted to demolish the castle. All that remains of the castle today is the substantial four towered gatehouse, and the surrounding earthworks.

I challenge Kit to write a much more imaginative note...

Hi Caroline - very lengthy and well written note- and the gauntlet has been thrown down for Kit ;) Nice tones in this picture- I like the dark clouds and the sunlight on the entrance it gives the photo an ominous feeling- well done!

Best wishes,
Steve

A nice picture of an interesting subject with good composition and point of view. The photo though has very high contrast (unless it was intended.) due to the high contrast most photo elements have been unreconizable and most of the foreground just blended with the frame.

Well - blow me down with a small charge of TNT! Castles in the air it is! And it's a sunset shot with no sunset, which is just the way I like 'em.
What are you on about, CJP? Write a better note than that? Easy, I'll just google up some intelligent NON-imaginative stuff and have GrandPa polish it for me. Too easy. No challenge. This is to say tnat I believe every word of your note and I like your photo, even if it could be sharper ;) AND what's all that at the bottom ... black on black. This is where the very thin white line at image edge would have been a good choice PLUS is it saturation or contrast that has been criminally abused? We'll never know.
You still on yet another holiday?
