[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Going back to the Duxford airshow two weeks ago, I wanted to upload the classic workhorse. The Douglas Dakota DC3.
The DC3 was to transportation what the Spitfire was to fighter planes
Personally I think it's the most graceful looking big bird of the early years of aviation transport, so to show my appreciation of the plane, I've uploaded this shot.

Remarkably, the DC3 is still in service today with some of the smaller private airlines and cargo hauliers, but it was still used as a commercial airliner by over 400 airlines right up until 1998, that's 63 years after its maiden flight of December, 1935.
A remarkable achievement, which shows how practical, robust and reliable the machine is.

This particular DC3 is in the Norwegian airline livery, but no matter what livery it wears, it still looks good.

I like this particular shot for a few reasons, some of which are: the unpainted but polished airframe reflecting the blues and whites of the sky, the strong contrast of the bright red tailplane, the very way the plane is sitting in the air at the moment of the shoot, showing off the lines and curves of the plane, and the general contrast of plane, sky, cloud ratio.

Handheld, panned and fired when the frame was full.

For prop blur, I always seem to break the rules...EG, we are taught ideally to have a shutter speed greater than or equal to the focal length. That never seems to work as well as a slightly slower speed, so opted for 1/160 and f8 for depth.

wow, martin again a wonderful shot, surprised to see that still this plan is flying, Once used to be the plane of our country's founder QUAID E AZAM in 1947... :) and u've captured it breliently. Good job done. TFS

Hi Martin,
Excellent crisp and clear image of this grand old lady, the DC3. Perfect captured as if you were flying along with this beauty. Great aviation posting Martin!

I like. The polished metal fuselage is "retro" in a way that really fits the subject. I love the design of those old planes, they look so rugged and robust and dependable (probably aren't, but hey.)

Would like to see how this would look with the plane placed slightly lower in the frame, with more sky above ... or more closely cropped.

I'm guessing from the look of this that you applied USM after the resize ...? There appears to be some pixel ghosting under the fuselage and on the back edge of the tail? I use Photoshop CS and usually just apply 'sharpen' at the very most, and in some cases reduce its effect by sharpening a 50%-opaque layer.

Best thing about this shot is your POV - it really looks as if we're flying alongside.

You did well here Martin a brilliant capture...we have one here at RAF Lyneham... but it is on static display with 47 Air Dispatch I might go and take a few shots when I get the chance
