Great Hornbill - Buceros bicornis
Taken today at Chester Zoo
Buceros and bicornis are Latin words meaning 'horned like an ox' (Buceros) and 'two horned' (bicornis). Both descriptions refer to the huge yellow bill topped by the casque.
Male Great Hornbills are larger than the females. The males also have black marks on the casque. They eat fruit, being especially fond of figs and may spend all day feeding at one fig tree. They also hunt small animals such as locusts, beetles, lizards, snakes and nestling birds.
Great Hornbills are found in forests where they usually live in pairs or small family groups.
They nest in natural holes in trees. After mating the female is walled up inside the nest hole. The entrance is sealed by the female from inside and by the male from outside using droppings, chewed pieces of wood and bark and leftover food. A small slit is left through which the male feeds the female while she is incubating her eggs and looking after her one or two chicks.
A hornbill's bill is not as heavy as it looks. The inside is honeycombed to make it lighter. |
