Hello Everyone,

The fruit that I have chosen to post is the fruit of the holly bush. I chose this, not just because it is decorative, but because it is a source of food for the wild birds.

At the moment, the birds are so busy searching for food for their broods of nestlings that I thought it would be an opportune time to draw attention to their need for natural sources of food not to be destroyed.

Here is some extra information from Wikipedia:
Holly berries are mildly toxic and will cause vomiting and/or diarrhea when ingested by people. However they are extremely important food for numerous species of birds, and also are eaten by other wild animals. In the fall and early winter the berries are hard and apparently unpalatable. After being frozen or frosted several times, the berries soften, and become milder in taste. During winter storms, birds often take refuge in hollies, which provide shelter, protection from predators (by the spiny leaves), and food. The flowers are sometimes eaten by the larva of the Double-striped Pug moth (Gymnoscelis rufifasciata). Other Lepidoptera whose larvae feed on holly include Bucculatrix ilecella (which feeds exclusively on hollies) and The Engrailed (Ectropis crepuscularia). The Japanese Beetle (Popillia japonica) is another well-known animal feeding on holly leaves.

Many thanks for stopping by.
I hope you enjoyed your visit.
Please feel free to offer feedback on any aspect of the photograph. :-)

This will make a lovely Christmas photo Bev. And the black border / frame goes well with it too.
The white OE on the leaf spoils it a little and I think if you had
cloned them out it would look betetr.
Still it is a joyous image

Hi Bev,

Not long ago we had a year that our holly bush hardly produced the red berries - and indeed they look very decorative.

P.S. How are you doing with shooting on Aperture priority now? -- this one might have benefited from the longer dof :)

Nice shot Bev,

Great colours... while I was in England, I see many of these just next to the road, is everywhere, and they are sooo pretty! Make me feel like Christmas is right there... funny how one can create the mood just because it is the symbols of Christmas. Great lighting and framing, very nice dof too. :D

Have a nice day,

Cheers,
