Corfe and the DOF

A kind of experiment today.

You might have wondered what I was shooting in this picture posted by Silke. Well I was trying to make a picture of the nice town of Corfe in Dorset, with a huge DOF, using the Sigma 18-50mm lens together with the Cokin gradual grey filter I took several shots with different camera settings. This one appeared to me as one of the best, but I’m curious about your opinion. The camera settings were here: Focal length 34mm, shutterspeed: 1/45sec and f/11.

In the WS you find another impression from the same POV.

PP work:
Shot in RAW. Minor adjustment of brightness and contrast. Cropped, resized and converted to JPEG, sharpened add frame and text.

Beautiful view, very nice colors.

A rule of thumb for landscapes is to invision a 1/3rd of the way in, that's the focus area and while holding the shutter to keep the focus, recompose and capture the moment.

F16 is a good start. Always good to use a tripod.

Nice work Hans. This is an important lesson about DOF.
Especially when doing hand held landscape shots.
One I myself am currently trying to put into practice!

I prefer the WS version a tiny bit more here.
mainly because of the crop and straight horizon make it much more appealing. pLUS, IT looks awesome in A widescreen frame!
Well done.
- Vincent

Nice photo, good sharp image through the whole range of distance....
The horizon split doesn't look right to me though! I'd definately think a good crop of all that blue would make a much stronger image.

David

Hi Hans,
Beautiful landscape! After the close-up on you by Silke, you give us the pleasure to see this large view!
I think that I prefer the one in workshop for the more tight composition and as Vincent said the widescreen frame is more effective! Just personal taste! I know how this is vey hard to make choice of different versions!
Bravo and thank to share with us!! Annie

Sorry but I prefer the WS over this one.
I find it sharper.
Not that this one isn't good but not as much as the one in the WS.
Piet

Great foreground too

I slightly prefer the ws version, Hans. In this post I think the foreground is way too prominent, and the town is almost hidden behind it. For me DoF was too big, I'd have focused on the town and have tried to keep the foreground OOF. I also prefer the wider aspect of the shot in the ws.

What I do like is the nice colour saturation and - though, given the above, this may seem contradictory - the large DoF. Uh? Well, yes: the large DoF. But that means that the town is not THE point of interest in the shot, the whole landscape is. What I'm trying to say (have difficulty "discovering" that myself now) is that your goal "I was trying to make a picture of the nice town of Corfe" imo was not achieved here, because the town is not the prominent subject. What you do show (as I see it) is a beautiful piece of Dorset's countryside.

Hi Hans, my first impression after looking at the 2 images are that the WS one is sharper. The town and even the plants in the FG are all sharper.
This one is slightly better composed, but the WS is the better one all over - (IMHO)
Lovely green colours, and it looks a super view.

Hoi Hans,
Prachtig stukje landschap.
Joop!

Hoi Hans,
Excellent capture ,great perspective and colours..
Excellent view and beautiful landscape.Well done my friend.TFS.

The crop is fine by me Hans, the thrid rule (for those who adhere to it) applies. Good colour and light with fine detail but I feel too much sharpening. TFS,
David

PS this version for me

Good choice of lense and the setting is perfect. The long view is clean .

Very lovely picture of pictoresque Englisch country Hans, although a few clouds could be useful it all looks very peaceful.
Thanks mate!

Hoi Hans,

Dennis

Beautiful landscape - sharp details, superbly saturated colours. Personally I prefer this one to the WS, which says something more about photography than techique - not everyone feels the same way about is presented to them. Ansel Adams said that every picture always has 2 people in it : the photographer and the viewer, and it's these people who make the picture.
Thanks for sharing
Mark
