[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hello everyone,
just a quick note today. This one was taken on the evening of my day out at Slimbridge a few weeks ago. The light was going and it was getting harder and harder to take reasonable pictures. This isn't the best shot in the world I know, but I like the composition and thought it might be worth posting. Advice on how to improve it very welcome, as ever!
Resized for upload.
Cheers, John.

Hii, nice shot.

Hi John,

I really like this the pastle colours in the sky work well and although there is no detail in the birds the and technicly the shutter speed is way too slow for a flying bird shot, I think they came out really well I like the ghostly feel they have, good sense of movement too.

The compostion works really well here too I like the way the three birds are all at differnet stages of "flapping"

Cheers
Tom

A very lovely composition, soft looking and the leader showing off a bit of movement adds to it.

Hi John - reminds me of the ducks on the wall in Corrie! :-)

Composition is good, idea is good - shutterspeed isn't fast enough, though. Basic rule of thumb is that you need a shutterspeed faster than the focal length. e.g. at 200mm you need faster than 1/200 etc. Here the focal length was 165mm, so the shutterspeed of 1/80 was just too slow. It's a rough rule of thumb that works pretty well for stationary object. Here you have to take into account the movement of the birds - catching birds in flight is damned tough! I dont know if you panned or shot when the birds came into frame...but tracking the birds through the lens, panning, would prob be the way to go.

So...pan, use a faster shutter speed and open the aperture a bit to compensate. And practise a lot :-)

To be honest though, a wee bit of blur here isn;t a bad thing, especially on the wings. It gives a nice sense of motion and that can work too.

hi john,
it is a very beautiful image with a great composition...
very well done...
I like it much...

Hi John, good framing and motion blur, I rather like this, the way the swans are in the left hand part of the frame and the lovely sky works. TFS, Dad

Hi John
Really like this one mate, superb colours and a strong sense of movement
Hope you're not working too hard - I'm dying of boredom and they've signed me off untill half way through April
