Auschwitz Birkenau II - The Entrance

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Greetings from the UK. I am new to Treklens, so this is my opening image.
I have always wanted to go to Auschwitz Birkenau to pay homage and my deepest respects to those people who lost their lives to the Nazi regime during World War Two. After a recent visit to Poland I decided to make the journey to Oswiecim (the Polish spelling of Auschwitcz). The majority of the place is now in rapid decline and in ruins, much work is needed to reserve the building and surroundings. During my visit, I decided it would be nice to share a "virtual" photographic memorial with you all so that we never forget this tragedy. It must never happen again. The place is now very tranquil and surreal. At one point on the visit I broke down in tears as I stood at the very place where peoples fates were decided by the German SS. More photos will follow in the series.
This particular image was taken looking back at the main entrance gates. These gates were to become known as the "Gates of Death". More than 1.1 Million Poles, Jews and Soviet POW's passed through these gates. More than 50 per cent of these people perished due to starvation, physical exhaustion and executions.
I hope you like the image. There will be more to follow and please do leave either feedback or a personal note and pay YOUR respects. Thank You. |

Impressive start, CJ
It's a good thing to remember this forever !
About your photograph:
I like the desaturation in this pictures. It fits the subject very well.
I would have corrected the slight tilt in your horizon.
Thanks for sharing
Marcel
Hello,
Good picture, and really good note.
Extermination camps was one of the most horrible things in our [All World] history. We should remember about it.

Hi,
Nice tribute and work.
Good selective colour effect.
But tell me why you placed "Auschwitz Birkenau" as if it was in the UK ? ;-)
Need to choose the right country and city.
BTW: Auschwitz and Birkenau are both different places/towns.
