Good Morning Everyone,

This morning, I am posting a very close-up shot of a goldfinch, in my garden.

I hope this shows you how the goldfinch's powerful triangular beak deals so effectively with the niger seeds. The birds peck for the seeds and then spit out the husk. Occasionally, they spit out seeds, too, and there is a big clump of niger plants growing around the base of the feeder. I am impatiently waiting to see what the flowers will be like!

The birds are much more frequent in the early evening. I suppose it's equivalent to their supper time!

I tried to get a shot of the plump baby goldfinch but it was even more skittish than the parent birds!

For people in the U.K. (not sure about the rest of the world), if you do not have these beautiful birds visiting your gardens, do try niger seeds in your feeders. Other finches will be attracted, too.

Many thanks for your interest.
Please feel free to feedback on any aspect of the photograph. Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
Seeing this makes me wish I have a longer telephoto lens. The goldfinch is well captured. And yes I do see the detailed triangular beak with what appears to be an insect in between. A lovely composition. Best regards...

Hi Bev, Boy this bird is very clear and colourful. It is the sort of photo that i'd like to get too. Having the bird-feeder nearby is a good idea. Spectacular presentation. TFS. Murray.

Hi Beverley

I like the warm cold colour contrast between the cyan & red on the bird's face. Good dof & sharpness & nice to have a reflection in the eye. Tfs!

Great close up Bev, your certainly getting the hang of this bird photography lark (excuse the pun).

Don't really think this one could be improved.

Great stuff

Peter

HI Bev,

THis is exquisite. Awesome capture of this goldfinch. We have these in New Zealand, in fact I had 4 or 5 of them land in my garden last autumn and feast on marigold seeds in the deadheads. GReat close up photo. Well done! TFS.
