| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The ruins of Fountains Abbey, in North Yorkshire, are the largest monastic ruins in the country. It was founded in 1132 following a dispute and riot at St Mary's Abbey in York. The abbey operated for over 400 years, until 1539, when Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
This is a photograph of the Cellarium, and its incredible vaulted ceiling of which has remained intact by escaping Henry VIII’s brutal sixteenth century dissolution of the abbeys. It is in this room where the lay brothers ate, slept and socialised .
There are over eight spices of bats living in the nooks and crannies of the ceiling. |
