This is commonly referred to as an "Early Purple Orchid" here in the UK. What a bizarre name, eh? It's almost always the first native orchid species to flower here, it's usually purple and it's an orchid! Mind you calling it a late yellow fruit bat would probably confuse people ;)

As I've already mentioned, this is usually the first native orchid to flower in the UK season - the last species will flower in August/September, with the bulk appearing in June.

The Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula) tends to grow in old deciduous woodland on chalk, often alongside the Bluebell, a couple of which are just about visible in the background here. I've posted a shot of some Bluebells -here on TrekEarth- if you're interested. Usually this species has spotted leaves, but it's not guaranteed.

All UK orchid species are perennial (they live for a number of years), however they also all take a long time to flower - the quickest can produce their first flowers four/five years after the seed germinates!

Orchids are also very susceptible to interference from man - fungicides reaching the plants will often result in the complete destruction of their site. The reason for this I'll explain in the next shot if you're lucky :)

great composition as always and the dof is interesting kind of curious. you know your orchids very well informative photo note
and you most certainly have a great eye for flowers keep them coming. this is an excellent photograph
***momshu made a good point is it a reflection-- I personally don't think it is a reflection.

i love how you take the orchid. nice composition.great dof.

We have several varieties of these little temperate, native orchids around here. They sure are pretty! In this composition, it is nice to get a hint of the flower in its environment, especially with the parallel orchid behind.

Very good picture Adrian. The colors are well-saturated and the light adds a magical touch to these flowers. Good compo too.

Very sharp, you chose a good time to get this, as the shadows on the rhs make the flower more 3d. good bg, well done.

Fantastic shot of these amazing plants! They bring immense pleasure to the cultivar and novice alike. I personally love them, but do not have much success due to a hectic work schedule. Maybe one day when I hang up my boots! Your note is particularly informative. Very well done.

Beautiful image, Adrian, with wonderful light and colors. The repetition, the dark background and the just noticeable bluebells in the back make this orchid standing up in a superb composition. Our first orchids here are in the chalky hills above the Seine river. The variety nearly mature now is the orchis pyramidal (Anacamptis pyramidalis) You shot will be a good inspiration.

I see, you posted this when i was gone, that is why i missed it.:) It is a vey nice capture with good DoF. I do find it a bit dark thought. Mabye you can adjust the dark part with levels or curves. I think it would bring out more detals on teh right hand side of the flower.

I was waiting patiently for another orchid photo from you, and the wait was worth it! Very nice composition.

Really nice control of the DOF to get both subjects framed in such a pleasing way. Very nice colors as well.

Nicely done.

Superb colour and crispness - enhanced, I reckon, by the unsharp twin in the BG. Good to see so many excellent shots of wild flora in your portfolio... as a landscape architect, this is a winning subject for me!
