‘The Ghost Tower’

This photo is of a wall dating back 900 years. The wall is part of what has become known since that time as ‘The Ghost Tower’, so named because it is thought to be haunted by the ghost of Sir Fulke Greville, Earl of Warwick. Sir Fulke was fatally stabbed by a disgruntled servant, dying in 1628.

He was a prominent poet and author during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and then King James I. Despite leaving instructions for his tomb and burial to be in St Paul’s Cathedral in London, his body was instead laid to rest in the family mausoleum in the crypt of the Church of St Mary’s, Warwick. This centuries-old church, located in the heart of Warwick township, is only a few miles from the imposing and majestic Warwick Castle.

The building of the castle commenced in 1070 and the establishment of the Earldom of Warwick by King William I was in 1088. Warwick Castle remained the Earls of Warwick family seat until 1978 when David Greville, the son and heir to the 7th Earl, sold the castle to The Tausauds Group.

The photo I have posted for this Friday’s ‘Stone Wall’ theme also includes guttering clearly dated 1741 and ornately decorated with a cherub. There are also the large initials F and B, these likely denote Francis Brooke since the later Earls of Warwick also held the title of Baron Brooke.
