The other morning the world sparkled like diamonds with a heavy frost.

With all these false diamonds it did make me think of the saying: "All that glitters is not gold".

The phrase simply means that just because something may seem valuable, desirable or attractive, it does not mean that it will be worth having once you discover its true nature.

The Origin of the phrase:

The 12th century French thelogian Alain de Lille wrote "Do not hold everything gold that shines like gold".

It was Englished by Chaucer in the Canterbury
Tales (1389) as: "But al thyng which that shyneth as the gold /Nis nat gold, as that I have herd it told."

Shakespeare used the wording "All that glisters is not gold" in The Merchant of venice. Glister is an old version of "glisten",

The same passage in the Merchant of Venice that contains this phrase also has the phrase:

"Fare you well; your suit is cold.
Cold, indeed; and labour lost:
Then, farewell, heat, and welcome, frost!"

great capture...i love the clarity..you can even see the small spider webs running between the stems. well done!

Hello Karan,
Surprising to see this frozen beauty from Sussex while we have 10C over in Norway!
Backlight works well here, and the composition has good lines...
Cool and lovely!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Great lighting on the ice creating the glittery effect and like the tight crop composition, but I would have preferred to see more of the heads in sharper focus.

Hello Karan,

Very interesting notes... :D like you are telling a story.

I like your "diamonds" shot... they look so pretty, excellent composition, lighting and details, I can also see some spider's webs around it. :D Very well captured, thanks for sharing

Hi Karan,
What an interesting shot! The frosty flowers look like avid hands tended to receive the rays of the sun. Beautiful gleams and image well composed. I find that your note goes round the question! Just an little add. In Quebec city, a cliff was named the Diamond Cape by the first explorers, what a great disappointment for them when they learned that was iron pyrite! :)
Bravo and thanks for sharing! Annie

Very nicely captured, Karan. Very nicely composed (maybe a tad tight on the left but that is minor), with great light and good DOF. I like the spider web linking the plants. Well done!

Hi Karan,
Excelent icy picture you show here. The ice cristals are clearly shown with perfect lighting> So you have your (first ?) frost of the season? Anyhow love to see more of this kind of pictures, it's a joy for the eye!
Hans

:) Later...

Lovely use of the light to capture the frost. Interesting choice of DOF to have one stem in focus and the rest OOF - with the placement of the stem I might have been tempted to crop from right or left to dectralise the focus, but thats just another take on what is a cracking shot.
Thanks for sharing
