3 grape hyacinth flowers against a white piece of card.

tip of the day
it's the selected aperture that will make or break a flower shot. Too small and the background will be too focussed, competing with the main subject. Too wide and there may not be sufficient detail to make the image work. For environmental plant portraits close down a long way to capture some detail in the background, but still leaving it slightly out of focus to enable the subject to stand out well. With a wide-angle lens try f/8 as a starting point and always remember to check with the depth-of-field preview button if your camera is so well blessed. If the plant can be framed against a plain section of background it may be possible to stop right down and focus using the hyperfocal distance scale on the lens barrel, rendering everything bitingly sharp.

Bonsoir,
how lively colors this grape hyacinth flowers (muscaris in french)! with a perfect focus, beautiful DOF with the shadow of throwing flowers on a white background. Good PPwork for your frame with this small piece of bells coming out of the outline of it. Bravo!

Hi Sue,
I am never sure if these are classed as flowers or weeds but I do like them, you have produced a great macro here with good details and colour, the use of the two flowers in the background give a nice balance to the shot, I like the way you hav the smaall flower head just overlapping the frame, good presentation and PP work.
Well done
Regards Andy

Nice, very nice, I like the way the colours in the rear plants fade away, quite a delicate image, simple, but effective..regards h

Hi Sue, I like this trio. You have exposed the flowers very well. Very good sharpness on the front hyacinth and I like the softness of the 2 in the BG
And thank you for the tip
Cheers
Janice

Sue
Appropriate note - good reminder.
Like what you have done here - you have two backgrounds here or another way to look at the image is three threes. Your flowers go three deep as well as three images of the hyacinth. Hope that made sense!

Dan

Hi Sue,
First of all, you have a very nice gallery of flower images.
I like the shallow depth of focus on this one, it gives prominence to the front stem.
Good strong colours against the soft background, well done.
Pete.
