While on our way to Linn of Dee just outside of Braemar, we ran by this stag standing in this pasture eating the fresh green grass. We pulled over and I quickly took out the 400mm lens and positioned me behind a foot high stone wall.

The stag saw us pull over and got curious. He first spoted my dad hiding behind the car filming the stag but than also noticed me lying on the ground. He wasn't a scared fellow and really wanted to check us out.

I got some a whole range of good photos, even one that has a good facial expression, which I posted on TN, called What 'R Ya Doin'?

Red Deer in folklore
Red Deer are widely depicted in cave art and are found throughout European caves, with some of the artwork dating from as early as 40,000 years ago, during the Upper Paleolithic. Siberian cave art from the Neolithic of 7,000 years ago has abundant depictions of Red Deer, including what can be described as spiritual artwork, indicating the importance of this mammal to the peoples of that region (Note: these animals were most likely Wapiti (Cervus canadensis) in Siberia, not Red Deer). Red deer are also often depicted on Pictish stones (c.550-850 AD), from the early medieval period in Scotland, usually as prey animals for human or animal predators.

Hi Niek,
Wonderful capture, I like very much the expresion of the king, he felt you :).
Great focus, DOF and sharpening.
Excelent done!
Mihaela

Bonjour Niek,

Really majestic, the steadiness of its head is dignified indeed of the king of the forests. He seems more to be on the look-out on this version than that of TN where I like the light movement exquissée by the head. Great controls the focus and DOF, beautiful natural colors.

It's a true pleasure of admiring it. It could be the model used by the studios of Walt Disney for the father of Bambi

Heartily, Corinne

Well seen & captured, these animals look so regal, this one looks like he may have been on a diet over winter, hes a little thin, perhaps it's his way of keeping the hunters off him.

Hi Niek:
Outstanding capture with excellent angle...
super DOF to creat a perfect outline on the subject!!!

Hoi Niek,

Beauty, Niek. This one is better than the other (on TN). His horns stand out nicely from the dark bg, seems to be a bit of side lighting that enhances it even more.

A very regal portrait of this fabulous stag. He is quite alert. I must admit I like the TN version better though (my purely subjective opinion).
I like the splash of yellow at his feet here and the dark BG into which he can vanish when he wants to

WOW Niek!

A perfect composition of the stag! Razor sharp with the background just a little out of focus to isolate the subject!

He does look kinda curious... (^_^)

Well done

Is dat spinrag tussen z'n gewei? Wat een lens, Niek... haarscherp op 1/125 met een brandpunt van 400mm. Wauw.
Mooi van opbouw en vooral ook van kleur.

HI Niek, nice shot of this stag with the antlers still in velvet. It's a good pose and all the technical stuff is fine. How did you get the catchlights in the eyes? The light looks fairly flat for 3 pm (which is fine for this shot) as I can't see any shadows. I really like the yellow flowers in the foreground too. Well done.

salut ca va bien wow très belle photo mais je ne sais pas si c'est comme ca dans votre pays mais ici c'est l'orignal le roi salut bonne journée

Hi Niek, A fine pose you have captured well. The background is ideal, no sign of fences etc so completely natural looking. The subject is a fine aninal with an attitude. The 400mm lens has done a great job, so clear and sharp. TFS. Murray.

hello Niek,
this is an attractive image. As the picture does not quite fit on my screen I find myself scrolling up from the buttercups at his feet and towards his fine antlers. The sharp focus here displays well the soft, velvety texture of the antlers. You have him set against a typical background, its unclutteredness adding to your composition.A very Scottish image.

Bev

Beautiful wildlife shot - sharp details and smooth colours and tones. The DOF is perect and to cap it all the contact with the eyes is really strong. Great shot.
