A picture taken at the Museum of Flight, East Fortune, West Lothian. This is an Avro (produced by A.V. Roe company) Vulcan B2A.


The Avro Vulcan was one of Britain's nuclear bomb carrying "V-bombers" (the others were the Vickers Valiant and the Handley Page Victor) and first flew in August 1952. It was the World's first delta winged bomber and entered RAF service in 1960. Powered by four Rolls Royce Olympus engines, the Vulcan cruised at 625mph and had a range of 4,600 miles. It has a wing span of 111 feet and a length of just under 100 feet. This example (XM597) flew operationally in the Falklands' war in 1982.

This RAF Avro Vulcan B2A (XM597) bomber, part of the UK's nuclear deterrent force, was due for retirement in 1982 but then became involved in the the Falkland's War. It is one of only two Vulcans to be used in offensive operations. Due to a fractured in-flight refuelling probe, the Vulcan had to divert to Rio de Janeiro. On the nose (on the other side!) are painted two guided bombs as mission markings and a Brazilian flag - commemorating her unscheduled stopover.

Picture shot in RAW and converted and edited in PSE6. Taken with my new wide-angle zoom, nothing much was done to the picture other than cropping and cloning out of a tiny bit of fencing in the foreground.

Hello John,

A fine image from your new lens.

A marvellous sky [no polariser?] to set off this aircraft - a bit of a change from your usual shots of old cars and locos - though this must now been thought of as an antique.

Sharp, colourful and a great DOF.

this is an amazing shot. the pov has given this a feeling of movement. the sky is very dramatic and this is what appeals to me.
i am not a great lover of 'planes and have never been on one but i do see what the attraction is.

Hi John, a superb result from your new lens. I always liked the Vulcan ever since I saw one do a slow pass along the runway at RAF Finningly at a high angle of incidence then go to full reheat and stand it on its tail, awesome stuff. I love the perspective you have achieved on this, the sky and everything draws the eye to the aircraft. Spot one!

New lens put to great use! good picture of this awesome aircraft nice use of perspective to emphasise the plane. The sky just provides the perfect frame for the shot
