This picturesque structure spans the Livet at Bridgend where the river tumbles through a narrow rocky gorge. The exact age of the bridge is unknown but it is thought to have been built in connection with the nearby Blairfindy castle. Two arches of the bridge now survive, the third having been ripped away by flood waters during the great "Muckle Spate" of 1829.

What is a packhorse bridge
A packhorse bridge is a bridge intended to carry packhorses (horses loaded with sidebags or panniers) across a river or stream. Typically a packhorse bridge consists of one or more narrow (one horse wide) masonry arches, and has low parapets so as not to interfere with the horse's panniers.

Packhorse bridges were often built on the trade routes (often called packhorse routes) that formed major transport arteries across Britain until the coming of the turnpike roads and canals in the 18th century.

We were on our way from our campsite in Aberlour to the Cairngorms when we came by this old bridge. After surveying the area, I found a good spot to set up my tripod. It took some effort to reach it since I had to position myself on some slippery rocks. I had some trouble with the exposure, since I wanted to have some movement in the water without risking of loosing details in the sky. I finally used a grad ND filter to get the best result. But still the sky didn't turn out perfect. I have decided to work with HDR and tone mapping to get this result.

Hi Niek,
Great shot, nice colours and a great bridge, I like the movement you have captured in the water, good POV too and an interesting note.
Tfs Andy

Hi Niek, other than the heavy frame, I love this shot! Good pov on this with the crescent shape of the bridge. The sky was fine, TFS.

Hello Niek,
It is amazing to see such an old structure still working, but more or less taken over by nature!
Good point of view to tell the story of the bridge, rich colours and fine details!
Greetings,
Pablo -

In a friendly way

Hoi Niek,
Geweldige plaat, prachtige kleuren heerlijke compositie.

Mooi plaatje. Bedankt voor de info.
Jan

Well worth all the effort Niek, excellent shot, great to see portrait mode being used in landscape work.

HAHA! How I LOVE wide angles! they make an ordinary pic just jump! This is super! Love the burnt colors, really nice shot from a low profile! B-)

I'll be back.........

Hello Niek.
Lovely vertical landscape. Great POV and colour. Good composition and a nice sense of movement in the water. Looking forward to more of these. Well done.
Regards, Steve.

Very nice moody shot Niek, I almost could imagine I was a troll living under this bridge. I love the shadows and light, the water has a nice texture. I especially like the right hand side and foreground textures the rocks on the right leading the eye up to the bridge, well done.

Hi Niek,

Interesting to see this kind of bridge, which is not used for that purpose anymore. It remind me when playing city development game . .

Very well captured and composed with great detail of the bridege and surroinding. I like the angle in vertical format.

Tjutjut

Hi Niek,
And again you come up with a gorgeous shot.
At first glance i had visions of you slippery sliding down the slope just to get that perfect shot.
Well you did it. The lush green versus the grey sky and rumblin' water make it look sort of ancient but dynamic.

Niek,
This reminds me of Olde England. Very charming capture.

Hello Niek,

Beautiful fresh colors here. Nicely composed. Looks like a painting. TFS

Hi Niek, i've just been looking at a picture similar to this in a photography book in the last 2 or 3 weeks, and your rendition is every bit as good. The flat lighting looks to suit this, and the foreground rock gives some nice interest, great natural colours and excellent DOF throughout. Well done mate.

Niek,
a very beautiful one here too !
Nice composition and format.
good exposure and general presentation.
Very well done !

Best regards,
Daniel
