Hi
This is a pair of soldier beetles making sure that the next generation is taken care of! :) They were spotted during a patrol of Shewalton Woods with Harry007.
I was a bit concerned at the size difference...the female seems much much larger than the male - so maybe I am wrong and this is mummy carrying baby! Dunno!
Anyway...The very common soldier beetle has a red body, with orange wing cases with black tips and black antennae. These beetles are frequent visitors to very open-structured flowers such as daisies or members of the carrot family eg hogweed and angelica.
Soldier beetles are very soft-bodied compared with other beetles. Their larvae resemble small velvety caterpillars and live at the base of long grass. The adults of this species are found in just a few weeks of summer in late July and early August.
Predatory on other flower-visiting insects and will take nectar and pollen. The larvae are predatory on ground-dwelling invertebrates, including slugs and snails. (http://www.plantpress.com/wildlife/o252-commonredsoldierbeetle.php)

Thanks for looking

Hi Linzi
Lovely composition and very good colours. The image is a little noisy so something like Neat Image might have helped with that. Very neatly framed and signed to finish off.
Should Harry really be looking ?
Cheers
