[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
First photo of the year....Just

My Girlfriend and I were up from London to join the Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, and for me to take some photos of the Scottish Landscape.

On New Years Day our Hogmanay hangovers were lifted by a bright morning and the prospect of a day exploring the beautiful Countryside by car. Unfortunately the Hire co. had other plans, I handed over my plastic driving licence to be asked ' have you got the paper section?'
I didn’t have, which meant 'sorry no car', damn!

So plan B swung into action, we caught a train to Stirling, and an hour later we pulled in. The weather was like our heads thick, foggy and gloomy. We were tempted to get straight back on the train and return to Edinburgh. However not to be deterred we tried the bus station and there lonely amongst all the empty bays was one Stagecoach bus, one driver and no passengers.

We explained to the driver about the car fiasco, and he suggested we went to a place called Crieff where the bus terminated and he happened to live. We suspected he moonlighted for the tourist board, he was certainly very proud, and did a great selling job. He even assured us it would be sunny there!

Convinced, an hour later we arrived in Crieff. As we chatted with the driver who we now knew as Tom, he suggested we visit the local distillery, but it was 2 miles or so out of Town. 'I know' he said
'why don’t you borrow my car?'

We had already been struck by the friendliness of everyone we had met in Scotland, but this was amazing. After getting over the shock, I said 'are you sure?'
'Your going to let us borrow your car to drive to a distillery, are you mad?
'I don't need it until eight o'clock when I finish work, take it'

Needless to say I didn’t have to produce a driving licence, paper or otherwise, and ten minutes later we were driving Tom's pride and joy through the beautiful scenery, and the sun was shining!

Later we drove alongside Loch Earn and made various stops so I could take photos, the light had turned very atmospheric and I was in photographic heaven. Without Tom's generousity I would have missed out on some great shots.

That evening I was quite relieved to get the car back in one piece, and we caught Tom's last bus returning to sterling. We handed back the keys and recounted our day to him.

Back in London, I have processed my photographic efforts and am thrilled with a moody shot of Loch Earn. I have entered it in a competition and hope it will do well.

If Tom ever reads this I would like to thank him for his hospitality over and above the call of duty! which made this photo possible, lifted our sprits and made the first day of the year very memorable. Thank you Tom.

Hello Martin, Wow what a brilliant shot! Congrats. What I really miss is some info about the shot. (lens, exposure, F-stop etc..)

Hi Martin,
I quit the note (honestly! not an english reader... having sometimes probs with understanding...) and concentrated on the photo. What can I say? Perfect one - great foreground against stunning background. Shifting all to blue tones adds a lot to the photo. I love the sharpness of the foreground compared with softness of bg. tfs and awaiting your next works!

Beautiful picture of one of my favourite country in the world, Scotland. This is beautifully composed with wonderful colours & great light (like you only get in Scotland). The water looks so pure and calm that it makes me want to look at this picture for ever maybe thinking that I can get to this place travelling through my screen. Excellent & welcome to TL!

Oh my Lord Martin, this is a very beautiful photo... very special too me, and I just had to add it too my favourites. I plan on traveling through Scotland/Ireland and England and this photo just put an ache to my heart, becuase now I yearn to see those places even more! This is nothing less than perfect, just fantastic. It's so beautiful it's almost simple... I don't know how else to say it. Just true beauty, thanks for capturing such a real beauty. :)

P.S. I loved the in-depth note, very detailed and this fellow Tom still gives me hope, that kindness will one day prevail! :)

hi Martin! Great photograph. really good exposure control with the light in the sky casting light on the mountains and water but at the same time seeing the rocks under the water too. very delicate balance and you got it. and thank yoou for taking the time to write the story. all good photographs have an equally engaging story about the photographer and what he/she went through to get the image. And you got to meet an angel in the process. How wonderful is that? and yes, that's a great lens indeed. good luck on the contest entry. its already a winner for many here i can see. tfs, jing
