I got permission from the local cobbler to take some shots of him at work, having never taken good shots from inside I wanted to experiment. Colin the owner allowed me to click away to my hearts delight and this is the result. I didn't want to use a flash so went for ISO 3200 after trying out various other settings.
The people from Selkirk are called Souters, a Scots word for shoemaker, as the town used to be known for making single shod shin or shoes to you and me, and it is roumered for an army the night before the battle of Philiphaugh.
This shot shows a pair of ladies shoes having the heel leveled before a new on is fitted the sparks are from a metal insert.

shot in raw re-sized and sharpened before being uploaded to tl from pspx1.

All c and c's are welcome.

Nice atmospheric shot Jon, used to get my boots resoled here too :-)

Would work well in black and white too I think.

Peter

Hello Jon,

An interesting social document and one probably not shown before.
A well judged, diagonal composition with life and movement supplied by the cascading sparks.
I think the slight graininess adds to the overall appeal.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Jon,
Outstanding shot Jon, you are really getting the hang of shooting in low light conditions, the focus and PoV is great, you have caught the sparks nice and sharp with the wheel in full motion and no desaturation of colours around from the intensity of the light from the sparks. Well framed and one to be proud of. Cheers
Bri

hello Jon,
intersting an unusual shot. I like these daily life scenes.I think you have composed this close up well, with the machine thing at a diagonal. The sparks bring the image to life.
best regards,
Bev

Excellent shot, Jon!
Really great light, good detail, well composed. I love the sparks flying off the wheel and I am amazed at how little noise you have at such a high ISO. This is a cool shot! Many thanks and kind regards,
Shelly

Hi Jon,
Cool shot, I had an idea like this too, but it never really eventuated to anything, lol. Good POV and crop, the sparks look well 'frozen'. I could be picky and mention the grain, but I won't :). Not too noticeable anyway. Was kind of the cobbler to let you take the photo, the last thing you want to do is blind him with the flash, haha.

TFS,
Scott.
