An afternoon off work and a rare and brief glimpse of sunshine meant a quick trip to one of my favourite places, Tweedsmuir, in the Scottish Borders. Then a very pleasant drive along the banks of the Talla reservoir and up a 1 in 5 windy single-track road to this wonderful viewpoint.

Here we are looking back down towards Talla with the little village of Tweedsmuir in the far distance. Just beyond here, the road dips steeply down to the reservoir - low gear and good brakes are recommended as well as the ability to reverse back up the twisty hill if you meet someone coming in the other direction!

Shot in RAW and converted and edited in PSE6.

Actually, there has been a great improvement in "GoogleEarth" in this area - you can see a very good picture if you click on Map:[view].

Nice spot. Good use of the road as lead-in from the lower right and nce placement of the sign, drawing the eye up and into the distance. Light, colours, and depth of field are all well managed.

Hi John,

Lovely clarity in this shot,as Rew said the road sign gives a good lead in,I hope I get a week of this weather, heading for a week on Skye tomorrow.

Hi Jon,
Great shot down the Talla, the colours in this pic are superb, I like the wall and road lead you into the picture and the rolling hills down to the reservoir. Nice calming image. Cheers

hi john,

excellent shot , good perspective.
light and colors are beautifull.
Details and sharpness great.
Best regards
John

Hello John,

Well, you’ve achieved two vital elements of composition here at a single stroke – a triangle, and a red object in the foreground!

Back to one of your favourite haunts, and a fine day for photography with that lovely sky.

The narrow road and the rocky wall and the green verges make a strong lead in from the bottom left, and the opposing slopes of the mountains on either side draw the eye gently down to the wind-ruffled water of the lake. And not a person in sight! Your Tamron lens at widest focal length has produced its usual marvellous sharpness from near to far.

An excellent picture.

Kind regards,

Peter.

PS: I know the signpost appears to be vertical, but somehow the appearance of the surface of the water and the base of the lowest clouds, makes me want to rotate the image clockwise a smidgeon. And isn't a 20% hill 1 in 5 in old money?

Hi John

Have to agree with graffer's critique about the slight rotation.
Now if I was to take this same view I would have stood behind the sign so that it was not in the image but it gives real interest here.
As ever a beautifully sharp image from that tamron lens.
Very nice.

Regards Derek

Hello John
Great pov here, the road sign raelly is a good lead-in to this view. Very sharp and clear as ever, and as others have said it looks like an amazing place - not only for taking pictures. The hill sounds as if it's not for the faint hearted!
Regards, Les
