For Halloween, I thought I'd post a picture of an old friend. Well, a companion. Well, actually a companion for studies, as it were.

When I was a student forty years ago, we were all required to have a skeleton for our studies of anatomy. Having a nice friendly skeleton to examine was as important as the huge dusty books on the subject. I bought this fellow secondhand (obviously!) for £15 but, once my anatomy studies were over, I couldn't bear to part with him.

Incidentally, when I first brought him home, I was stuck to think of a name for him. Immediately, my father wittily christened him "Napoleon" - because he was the bony part. Mmmmmm. So he's still Napoleon.

I took his portrait with him lying on a black cloth background with dim room lighting and a very small torch popped inside the skull. Shot in RAW and converted and edited in PSE6.

AWESOME halloween photograph!!!! the deep black BG really emphasize the skull plus the lighting inside...the teeth is kinda blurry i think ur trying to make it a little whiter isn't it? or its a smoke effect? anyways! all is perfect!!!

Happy Halloween! TFS

Hi Jon,
Beautiful shot, the colours are nice for the type of posting, the shot is pin sharp and a nice PoV to take Napoleon from. I had to use a caricature skull from the local supermarket for my post, severely manipulated! Great shot and nice teeth. TFS

Hello, John -
Awesome! A new twist on a classic Halloween image. Very sharp. The lighting from within, in additional to adding to the frightening feel, exposes the interesting fissures between the skull plates. Outstanding Halloween image.

hi John nice creepy shot very topical for today love how you done thie lighting here looks very bona fida

Hello John,
well Bony scares me for sure! Very Halloweeny indeed.I should have taken my camera shopping with me today as staff at Tesco were dressed for Halloween (but not the lassie with the puple hair who was just making a fashion statement ;)).

Highly successful shot.Shapes and colors are perfect.Regards Otto.

Good thing you kept old Napoleon all these years:) Funny play on words!
Great subject? well, maybe not my favorite, but certainly perfect for the theme. Well done with the light, giving just enough of a glow to the old boy!
Great job John

Hello John,

Good to see your old friend brought to life.

He looks to be in fine condition and has a better set of teeth than me.

You have placed his eye socket on a powerpoint, which gives strength to the composition.

However, this is at the expense of having less space for him to "look into", than there is behind his head.

I had a try at A WS to add a bit more space to there, but it didn’t look right.

Much more effective than a pumpkin!

Kind regards,

Peter.
