Hello everyone,
This one is hot off the presses! I took this earlier today at the Brecon Mountain Railway near Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. I liked the contrast between the engine driver (whose jumper was a very un - engine driver shocking pink colour, by the way!) and the small boy. It was originally in colour but I desaturated it and upped the contrast a bit because I thought it suited it. I also cropped the small boy's mother out of the frame because, well, she was in the way.
The Brecon Mountain Railway was opened in 1980 on part of the route of the old Brecon and Merthyr Railway, which closed in 1964. The locomotive pictured here is Graf Schwerin-Lowitz, an 0-6-2 well tank built by Arn Jung of Germany in 1908. It arrived at the BMR in terrible condition, apparently having its chimney destroyed by a low bridge on the final leg of the journey! It was rebuilt completely and has been working trains here since 1981, clocking up over 75000 miles in the process. A new boiler was built and fitted at the railway's own works in 1993. (From the BMR's leaflet.)

Original colour version posted to Workshop.

Cheers, John.

Hi John,
Great shot, I am glad you used B&W, he must have worn the jumper as a bet LOL, this works well, nice sharpness and detail with an interesting note, I can't help thinking the young lad is looking at the pink shirt not the train though.
Tfs Andy

Interesting idea ,good photo:)

You took it and told us a story by just looking at the picture... I like this kind of pictures. Without texts... and you know the story just by looking. Great work!

TFS.

Hi Big Bro.

Nice one it takes you back to a bygone era. I think cutting the mother out was a good idea as the two characters in it are perfect. I does look like the bloke is having a wee though!

Cheers
Tom

Hello, John.

Brilliant!

I can just see myself as that little boy - in fact I just put a picture of a steam locomotive on here a few minutes ago! Now that retirement is beckoning, I can see myself getting into this sort of thing - a little oil-can all of my own to squirt on bearings and axles and things, big brass gauges to look at and tap, levers to pull, valves to open and shut - all the things you were never allowed to touch as a kid. But now, nearly 60 years on, I'm big and I can do these things! Trouble is, I haven't really grown up - but who knows that and who cares?

A great picture, John! Fantastic!

Kind Regards,

John.

hello John,
nicely captured. looks good in black & white.

Top class John, the little lad could have been you 30 years ago! B&W works perfectly with this even taking into account that the shocking pink jumper would have ruined a colour shot. The guy obviously has no mirror in the house to see how he looks before he goes out! Even though the little lad's face is away from the camera it does not matter because the body language says it all. It looks as if he is standing on tip toe to see more even though his feet are both flat on the ground. Cheers, Dad

Nice one mate

Hello John
Much poetry is conveyed by your desaturation of this oldy and the casual postures of actors!
I see here three juxtaposed giants; the first being the locomotive itself, the experienced conductor and finally the
overwhelmed kid!
Best regards.
Robert

This is such a gorgeous shot. Im sure every little boy wants to drive an engine. Very nicely captured and I love the B&W effect. this just wouldn't look right in colour.
