[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photograph is of “The Angel of the North” near where I live in Gateshead. The scale of this metal sculpture is awe-inspiring. It is 20 metres [65 feet] high with a wing span of 54 metres [175 feet] – almost as long as the wings on a jumbo jet. It weighs 200 tons.

As you can imagine it was been photographed many thousands of times. In this photograph I have tried to take a different perspective. Hopefully it is an original shot, but I doubt it.

This was my first attempt at shooting in the raw mode of my camera. The intention was to get a halo around the angel and try and retain some of the detail as I was shooting into the mid morning sun. This was the first of many shots I took, most were cold looking, under/over exposed or the sun did not give the right effect that I was trying to achieve. However the last exposure was “warm” and it gave me the idea of “warming up” the best shot up. Your comments will be welcome
Bill

!

Good work Bill, good planning gives good results. A striking composition, very pleasing on the eye. Just a thought but I might have been tempted to clone out three people to leave just one person looking at the angel.
Thanks for sharing.
Michael.

hi bill
as you say in your note this angel has been photographed many times, this is amongst the best i've seen, gorgeous colours and i love the silhouettes of the people giving us a clue to the huge size of the angel. superb work, very well done.

Hello Bill,
Great lighting effect, I like colours and expressive composition.
TFS and best wishes,
Elena

Great capture...for me a perfect compostion.

Jos

An awesome shot. I've tried to photograph this a few times, but can never get the right light. Nicely silhouetted against a lovely warm orange sky. If this was your first attempt in RAW, I can't wait to see your next postings - RAW is the only format I shoot in now, far more flexibilty and control.
Alex.

Un ange comme celui la je n’en avais jamais vu …

Bravo pour cette très belle composition, Bill !!!
Antonio

You managed it so well. Its perfect result! Great silhoutte of sculpture surronded by holy light, and people clearly tells the how huge this artwork. Congrats!
Elif

I think this is the perfect shot, the figures on the left balance the bushes on the right and the halo is spot on, The image dosn't need any detail in the angel, congratulations Will.

Strong colours and lines Will. I like the variation in tones from light to dark. The halo is certainly a creative touch.

Joe

Looks great, especialy with the people silhouttes to show the magnitude.

TFS,
Pedro

Hi there!
A great shot! I have never seen this sculpture/monument before.
I love the warm colours, and the silhouettes work perfectly. The comparison with the tiny people really gives an impression of majestic size.
Well done!

I spotted this shot in your featured photo section...
The silhouette of the angel is very striking againts the background - and you have the halo lined up perfectly!
I especially like to see the people - they give an excellent sense of scale :)
