Sited atop the volcanic mound known as Beblowe Craig, Lindisfarne Castle is one of the most distinct and picturesque features of the Island and can be seen for many miles around.
Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the Castle was built in the 1550's using stones from the demolished Priory. In 1901, Edward Hudson (founder of Country Life magazine) negotiated its purchase from the Crown and in 1902 Sir Edwin Lutyens (the well-known architect) began the conversion to create the Edwardian country house you see today. The Walled Garden (originally the Fort's vegetable garden but re-designed by Gertrude Jekyll in 1911 as part of the conversion) lies to the north of the castle some 500m away. Her plans were recreated by the National Trust and planted for the 2003 season.

Great shot,Mark! The four white sheep at the bottom of the picture gives a very nice mood to that picture, contrasting with the severe and dark castle.Very well composed! Bravo! Michel

Nice setting for some new version of Hamlet, dark, threatening, mysterious, almost out of this world castle, against the peaceful pastorale of the sheeps. Impressive. Well done.

Mark this is a beautiful composition you have been able to obtain here. Nicely done and the choice of B and W is perfect and creates a melancholic mood. Well done.

A really good use of B&W here, nice composition and presentation of the shot. The extra darkening of the sky and foreground works very well. :)

Very nice POV, great light and use of B&W. Your note is excellent.Great job

Hi Mark,
So this is where Victor Frankenstine worked on his creation of life! Very dark and moody composition. I did a workshop hope you don't mind.
Well done :)

Mark this has a nice soft focus effect which works very well with the sheep. The conversion is nice as you kept the tones soft and yet you managed to get a brilliant contrast. Very well done sir! B

Very impressive structure. I don't remember ever seeing this castle. The tones you used work well. I can't stand it when private citizens take over these historical monuments. I hope at east the people who own it are British natives

You have given it a very menacing look. Great B&W.

Professional old balck and white type picture. There is even a small 3D effect.
Great realisation.

Hello Mark
Wow, very good picture

Agnes

Mark,
This is a great photo. I love your use of black and white to age the scene. Also, the sheep really make this a very authentic shot. I recently visited the area and took a couple of shots from the distance. Nothing that would be worth posting, but I did enjoy my time there.
Keep shooting,
Aaron
