A male Speckled Wood butterfly (Pararge aegeria) guarding his territory at the edge of a woodland path.Any intruder that flies in his 'zone' will be quickly intercepted and seen off.I watched him see off a couple of Green Veined White butterflies and he even flew at a dragonfly who dared enter his space!
The Speckled Wood feeds on Honeydew which is from aphids and are rarely seen feeding on flowers, except late autumn and early spring when there are fewer aphids.
The females are rarely seen as they spend most of their time up in the treetops.
I took this shot from a low angle and sneaked up real close and luckily he didnt fly off!(which usually happens).
Photo cropped and sharpened USM 30%

Wonderful shot, Andy. Even the "pupil" of his eye is sharp! He seems to be watching you...I love the fringe on his wings and the way the light filters thru it. Great composition and congratulations on your capture of the "illusive butterfly"....
Hello Andy, must have been really careful when you could sneak upon a creature so vigilant. Good macro, I love the bristly head.
Your note btw gives a lot of information on this butterfly!

Good macro of this butterfly! The details and the sharpness (eye, feelers and hairs etc.) are very good. You captured the beautiful model on its wings very well. Congratulation for this shot and well done...
Super! Lighting and focussing - spot on. And what a wealth of detail is revealed. He seems almost to be posing for you - I'm never so lucky I always end up 'chasing butterflies' :o)
So what lenght lens allowed you this close?
