Some more motocross. A shot from todays motocross near Horsham. Somewhere in the cloud of sand and gravel is a motocross bike. Taking a high line through the bank curve.

Another nightmare for digital photography. Dust everywhere, getting hit by stones every lap. Good fun though! A lot easier to work on are the bends, less time spent trying to correct exposure settings against the sky, from the shade of the trees. I just got a meter reading off the track, and with the 350D set on TV and 160 shutter speed put in, it couldn't be easier!

Now I have had a nights sleep, I'll add some more points to this shot.

I walked up the banking on the turn and I disappeared into the sand and gravel. Sod riding a motorcycle through it!

A completely different shooting technique is required between circuit and off-road racing. Circuit racing is very easy, once you have the settings and panning technique there, compared to the movement of the MX boys and girls. Jumps can be extremly hard to work on, unless you can find a background that is not just sky!

I bent a few rules I was told about shooting at MX tracks. Firstly I was standing on a left hand turn. I was told to either stand by jumps (obviously, flying bikes look good!) and right hand turns. No idea why to stand on right hand turns, I mean this is a left hander and has come out superb! Down to luck really, and with only five laps a race, theres not much time to get the shots I want.

As with all thing photographic, it's best to practice. Find something you enjoy doing and just play with the settings on the camera until you are happy with the results. Work with what equipment you have.

TV setting on the 350D is shutter speed priority. I've found that 1/160 to 1/250 are fast enough for MX, anything above just freezes the action too much. Below 1/160, then you have to have a great panning technique!

Happy snapping to all, and many thanks for the comments.

Great capture of motion here, the mass amounts of flying dust adds a great effect. Keep it up.

Really like this shot and all of the debris in the air. There is great detail in the dust and the enture rider and bike is nice and sharp. Nice work. TFS

Super action shot..I like the way the bike and rider are frozen, yet the background and dust are blurry, giving an excellent hint of motion. Thanks for the technical data in your note. That kind of info is always useful to know. Well done on a great pic. Best wishes, Vicky

Hi Daniel,
Great action shot, the rider and bike nicely frozen and good movement in the dust. Well worth getting hit by a few stones :-)
Cheers,
Adrian

Excelente enfoque y encuadre.
Buen trabajo.
Saludos.

Quick reflexes, well done.

Choice of shutter speed is one of the most difficult things to get right for action shots. Your technique sounds like you got it nailed! Thanks for the great tip. Great image, captured at a great moment. I personally would have liked to see a little more space in front of the rider as the crop looks a little tight there. This is still a great shot. Lots of action in the dust and you can feel the tension in the bike and rider as they go through the turn. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic shot Daniel. Couldn't be easier? I doubt it! Thanks for sharing the technique.

amazing shot! nice sharp areas as well as good motion blur. Great lighting and nice color as well. Very nice! JP

I think this is your best shoot so far - really good. i usually shot at slower speeds but then again I'm a lot closer to the bikes .

good to meet another motor sports shooter on TL .

Excellent Capture!I Love the dust flying up in the air.You use SS of 1/160 only? that is a good tip cause i always go for 1/250.TFS.
