[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It was such a beautiful day today, but I wasn't feeling to great so only made it as far as the garden.

We have a huge Wolf spider - Pardosa amentata - population so if the sun is out you are guaranteed a good show as they love to bask.

I'm still getting used to the new lens so this isn't as good as I'd like, but I'm slowly getting there.

A few facts:

Physical Description
Female wolf spiders are 5.5-8mm and males are 5-6.5mm. They are mottled brown.

Habitat
Wolf spiders live on the ground in open areas. On sunny days, they can be seen in large numbers in open patches of woodland.

Diet
They hunt small insects and sometimes other smaller wolf spiders.

Reproduction
When a male finds a female he will perform a courtship dance involving waving his front legs about and vibrating his abdomen. Often the female will respond by attacking him but the male persists. If he is lucky he will be allowed to climb onto the female and mate with her.

After the female has constructed an egg sac she will attach it to her spinnerets at the tip of her abdomen and carry it around with her. Because the egg sac is not carried in her jaws she is free to continue hunting.

When the spiderlings have hatched they will climb onto the Females back. She will discard the remains of the egg sac and continue hunting while carrying her babies. The spiderlings remain with their mother for about a week.

Nice shot, Julia! I like the focus on the eyes. My daughter reported that one came in her apartment (wrong thing to do) loaded with 'babies.' They scattered to the four winds and so she had to spray the house down with insecticide. Hilarious in one way, but I'm the same way--not in the house! Actually, I like spiders in general in their proper place. TFS.

Great shot Julia, love the detail on the face. This is the kind of picture that reminds me why I am so fascinated by nature and it's fantastically odd and curious forms
