This is one of my favourite photos taken on my recent European trip! This one comes from Scotland.
The monumant in the distance is the William Wallace Monument, and the barrel used in the foreground is that of a cannon positioned at the famous Stirling Castle.
Sir William Wallace (c. 1270–1305) was a knight and Scottish patriot who led a resistance to the English occupation of Scotland during the Wars of Scottish Independence. He was immortalised in the 1995 film "Braveheart", where he was portrayed by Mel Gibson.
The Wallace National Monument (generally known as the Wallace Monument) is a tower standing on the summit of Abbey Craig, a hilltop near Stirling in Scotland.
Completed in 1869 to the designs of architect John Thomas Rochead, the monument is a 220 foot sandstone tower, built in the Victorian Gothic style. It is from there Wallace was said to have watched the gathering of the army of English king Edward I, just before the Battle of Stirling Bridge.
