[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I thought a break from my Arizona images was in order today, but i'll be back again next week with more!:)

I took this shot yesterday on a field trip to Butterfly World at Preston park with the children from my sons nursery.
the reason for the question marks on the frame is because i'd love to know what species this is, and where they come from, there was no staff on hand to tell me yesterday.

PP Cropped, resized, resharpened & framed.

Bonjour Dean,
I don't know the species of this butterfly, but I would say to you in two simple words what I think of your photography: perfect and superb. Cheer!

Great shot..
Very bold frame. Makes it seem that the butterfly..(species unknown by this viewer) is climbing upwards.
Sharp and very well captured.

Hello Dean,

Nice close up shot, fine detail.

Malik & Mary.

"Heliconius" specie, not sure which one, the wings are not spread to give a good identity.

Nicely captured and well composed.

Hello Dean,

I promised to visit some of your border( -line ;) ) shots and give you my honest feedback.

As you can see I took your most recent shot here.

Here are my observations and questions:

a) it is of course your choice to use a border!

b) are you aware of the price you pay?

< In this shot you have - out of 800 pixels in each of the X & Y directions - produced a black space of 254 pixels... That is about a THIRD of the allotment! And of course consequently out of the 200K size allotment for a post on TrekLens you have also used at least 1/3 on Ks for this same < boring? > black space. >

Now the question arises, why would you sacrifice height&width < in pixels > and space < in Ks > for such a massive border?

That height/width and space can be used to show more detail, a sharper picture, and overal a better quality picture than we have here... as a result of the limitations created by only using 2/3 of your full potential.

Now if you were to present me with a copy of this shot, as sharp and clear as possible in the maximum dimensions in pixels and in Ks I would be able to look at 800 by 800 pixels worth of crisp and clear butterfly!

Then if I would want to hang this on the wall, plaquemounted, framed, or bordered, I would be able to start with the best product that can be produced under the TrekLens constraints.

I would encourage you, my friend, to take a crack at producing the "photo sans frontier"...
and showing us the optimum quality.***

< Most of us - I imagine - can imagine a border or framing of some sort around an excellent photo. The type of border or frame is likely a matter of personal choice >
As a photographer I would leave THAT to thed "customer" and I would try to present the best possible product.

Your post here, as excellent as this shot is, does not reach that optimum. Don't get me wrong, please, I am not disappointed with this shot, but for the technical reasons given above I make that statement.

If you are not clear on that, or have further questions I am very happy to clarify or help further.

Best regards,

Jay

PS I have avoided using a smiley, as this is a follow-up on the Forum discussion, and using a smiley would be confusing matters. I am not passing on an evaluation, just some observations on the technical aspects of the impact of using borders, etc. at the expense of picture quality.

*** Or if you like send me the original shot, and I will prepare a WS from it and show you exactly what I am trying to get across, and what it is I am trying to help you with.
