[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
After my last photo we took the path along the coastline to Crovie. Walking through the village, I came upon this scenery. An old boat filled with buoys against a renovated house. I immediately felt the need of a shallow DOF to make sure that the house would become slightly softer in focus.

At home I experimented with black and white and than decided to bring back the colors of the buoys since that was my main subject.

I can now upload some information on Crovie, but if you just go back to my previous photo all can be read. In stead, I will give you more information on my post processing. First you need to know that the photo was shot in RAW handheld.

PP work:
- White balance adjustment to 5800K
- Crop for a better fit and to loose some unwanted items in the FG.
- Converted to 16-bit TIFF.
- Opened in Photoshop.
- Levels adjustment layer where I only set the back point. (hold the tab key and move the shadowslider until you see black appear on the screen)
- Curves adjustment layer. I only adjusted the highlights to get a bit more brightness. I did set a masker over the buoys since they were already bright enough.
- Saturation adjustement layer. Added more red (+17) and more yellow (+13)
- Channel mixer adjustment layer. Clicked the monotone and set red to +32, green to -2 and blue to +106.
- Masked the buoys to retain the original color.
- flatened the layers.
- USM 200%, 1 pixel, 0 threshold.
- Frame.
- Resize to fit TL.
- Duplicated the layer and USM 100%, 0,3 pixel 1 threshold.
- Opened a mask on the layer. and masked the edges of the photo, not the frame.
- Flatened the layer.
- Converted the foto to 8-bit.
- Saved as a JPEG for TL.

I do hope that this information is useful to somebody.

good use of selective desaturation niek :)
excellent details and textures captured
i think a wider shot would work as well for this but this is still good :)

Interresting pov and striking treatment. Well done on that moody shot. Thanks Niek !

Hallo Niek,
Ruud

Excellent effect to emphasize the color of the buoys. Very well created contrast. Nice sharp image.

You just brought to mind another image that this will be effective for. Japanese lanterns in a store.

Thanks for the image and the idea.
Reid

Hi Niek,
Great shot, this works well with the B&W and the coloured buoys and a good POV, good informative note too.

Hello Niek,
An interesting effect with the red buoys in the rotten boat!
Good tonality in the black and white, the contrast is just right!
Greetings,
Pablo -

:-) OK-

Hoi Niek,
Prachtige gedeeltelijke "desaturation". Hoewel de achtergrond onscherp is vind ik dit in deze foto niet storend. Een mooie speciale artistieke plaat Niek!

Hi Niek.
Great idea. Well seen. I love the composition and subject. I wish I knew about layers. It's probably the one main thing I have no idea about, but I've seen great shots like this and they make me envious. Very well done once more.
Best regards, Steve.

I like the colors and BW combination, atractive photo, good details and nice pOV TFS

hi Niek

These image dont always work IMO, but this one works great. good subject and excellent PP work to get the best results possible from selective colouring. Well done Niek!

Hi Niek

The shallow DOf works well here to isolate the main focus of your shot, the buoys. The selective desaturation works as well. Lovely B&W tones

This is fun Niek. I like seeing you experiment. I am not good at that. I think I would like to see just a little bit more of the black and white in the immediate foreground... the bottom of the image. Nicely executed.

Evelynn : )

het zwart/wit effect tegenover het gekleurde is ook mooi!
