When you've read my story in my Travelogue, you know that we did a wildlife safari near Aviemore. That day we got up real early with a rather heavy fog. The fog didn't give us a great opportunity to see any wildlife, but it did gave us some wonderful photo opportunities for more intimate landscape photography.

On our way to Cairn Gorm Mountain we stopped at Loch Morlich to spot Black Throated Divers. We did not see any, but did see some ducks and ofcouse a very beautiful tranquil scenery.

I was immediately atracked to this scene. The two brightly colored buoys gave such good contrast with the rest of the nature scenery. The reflection of the Caladonian Forest on the flat surface of the lake slighly covered in the heavy fog created a wonderful feeling and mood.

To create this composition, I had to use a lens that is not that often used for landscape photography. The 400mm allowed me to position the two buoys in the lower part of the composition and capture good details in both the forest and reflection. A shorter lens would have made the two buyons small dots in a large grey scenery.

My post processing to this photo was minimum. I adjusted the levels to find both white and black point, and gave the histogram on both side a bit more room so that shadows wouldn't turn black and highlights would become white. I also saturated the yellow a little just to bring out the colors of the trees and grasses so that it would display the colors as I remember them.

I hope this photo will bring you some tranquility. If more is needed, please also look at this version on treknature: Fog over Loch Morlich

Very impressive shot, Niek - I love the quality here. The water looks like ice, it is so calm and the reflections - of the buoys in particular - are exquisite. Very lovely shot, my congratulations to you!

Witaj Niek,

It's very moody shot. Nice asymmetric composition with contrast between soft background and colorful first plan :] Interesting note, thanks. Well done & TFS :]

Hi Niek,
that's again so wonderful, I like the softness and the peaceful atmosphere - broken from the red and the blue think in the water, real eyecatchers, pretty motive, thanks

Hallo Niek.
Werkelijk een prachtige foto. Lekker weer om dit soort plaatjes te maken. De kleurrijke bal en emmer zijn de creme op de cake.
Good Job.
Jan

Hello Niek,
Lovely tranquility!
Fog not only mutes colours, it also mutes sounds and thus adds to the mystical atmosphere...
Without the two dots of colours this would most likely be boring but the buoys make the image! Pity they are not three, hehehehe...
Greetings,
Pablo -

The overriding impression here is the stillness. The water is like glass. The two colored objects accentuate the quietude by just sitting on the water without a ripple. Nice atmosphere.

TFS!

Hello there Niek

Stunning image here, full of mood and character. Superb reflections and you caught the fog perfecty.

Lovely post my friend

TFS regards Helen

Lovely tranquil mood to this Niek, the reflections from the buoys look perfect in every way and the colours from them seem to fit with the muted B/G colours of the trees in the distance. Lovely shot! TFS

You had a good eye here. I love the flat colors created from the fog. Great contrast with the colorful buoys. Their reflections add alot to the shot. Well done my friend!

Hi Niek

The mist gives you a lovely soft focus feel apart from the small buoys that loom out of it. The still waters gave you a lovely reflection. Well seen and recorded

Nicely done, Niek. The 400 did make for a nice composition. This is nicely seen and recorded. The only way I could see improving the shot was to go for a boat to move closer to the buouys, to make them clearer and the bg relatively blurrier. Next time, remember the inflatable boat in your camera kit! :-)
Mike

Actually, on this one, Niek, I felt that the buoys distracted from the mood here since you said you were trying to get 'mood.' Maybe rather than centering the water line, it might have worked better to adjust it up or down. The biting fish is nice. TFS

Hi Niek.
This is a bit diffrent. You're experimenting on here a little lately. Me too ;) I like the simple composition. And the contrast between the sharpness of the buoys and the softness and subtle colours of the b/ground. Very nice. Well seen.
Best regards, Steve.

I had to laugh when I saw this! We found a Buoy like this at the beach in Galveston. We brought it home, threw it in the pen with the donkey and it was halarious. Donkeys are VERY territorial. He would grab the end of the buoy, trot over to the fence and would try everyway he could think of to get that buoy out of his pen. But most times, it would just flip up in the air, come down on his backside and he would jump, scream and run all over the pasture and then we'd go again. HAHA!
I love this! The thumbnail really caught my eye here! Very nice!

Hi Niek,
these two bright coloured objects add some 'visual spice' to the rather muted ambiance.
Interesting visual effect !
