At our luch stop during our wildlife safari we stopped at the end of the road in the Strathdearn along the River Findhorn.

We had to take a bit of a quick lunch, because heavy rain clouds were comming our way. Just before the rain came into the valley the gaps in the clouds allowed the sun to give the landscape these wonderful patches of illuminated colors. I was lucky that a few sun rays illuminated the old farm and the two trees.

In the last couple of days I have search much of the internet to find some information on this abandoned farm. But I have not succeeded. The information I would really like to have is: Who lived here, when was the farm abandoned and why? If do have that information, please share it with me. Or if you know an internetsite that might have some of the information, please share it with me as well. The farm is located on the otherside of the river just past the Coignafearn Lodge and before Dalbeg.

Thank you.

Hoi Niek,
Hans

Genial composición Niek.
Buena presentación y perfectos colores.
Me gusta mucho esta imagen campestre.
Saludos, JL.

Hi Niek,
you found a wonderful place, the sky so dark - but it seems there is so much sun on the farm and the two lonely trees.
I also like the green so much, what a great view, thanks and many greetings

Hi Niek,
Great shot, good colours and an excellent POV, this really shows the size of the hills in the BG, why would anybody want to abandon this place in such stunniung landscape.
Tfs Andy

A truly beautiful landscape shot. As you say, the sun hitting the farm and tree's really makes the image stand out.
Great work, thanks for posting.

The colours, emptiness of the landscape, the word rain... everything in this photo reflects beauity and peace. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Niek,

I am sure it will be the usual story, although all around is great beauty the people in this remote farm would be forced to move to a town to survive. The buildings and two trees set against the hills work well. And you are correct! my Tiree photo had the sky added, I forgot to mention it, you were the only one to notice, well done.

doet me erg denken aan de picos in noord spanje
heerlijk minimalitisch
erg goede compositie en goed kader

This is a nice pastoral scene, but the light really makes it stunning. Even though you did a good job with the exposure, I don't see the need for so much sky. It's kind of funny, this was only 70mm but has the feel of 200 or 300m to me. I guess I've just adjusted to the 10-20mm. (I posted one yesterday at 18m and I was thinking it felt a bit cramped).
Mike
P.S. Sorry, I don't know anything about who lived there.

hello niek!
excellent composition and very nice view on this old farm.
great colors and light.

Beautiful!!! I love the light on the house & tree.

Hi Niek, reminds me very much of the lake district area, love the way you've composed this shot with the barn and farm house on the lower thirds, I also like the way you've used the portrait format as it shows the immensity of those hills compared to the ant like size of the buildings, tones, colours and sharpness are all perfect. Nice work Niek! TFS

Hi Niek,
Excellent capture . The buildings give a good reference with the moutains . This is a splendidlandscape image . I like the composition and the natural colors .
Daniel

Marvellously atmospheric landscape Niek, nice to see the use of portrait mode.

All the green hues and brooding sky make for a marvellous shot.

Composition is spot on too farm buildings sited perfectly.

Love the light in the shot giving good detail to the hills.

Ja, Tja, Als je er aan de onderkant wat afhaalt staan de huisjes er qua compositie beter op, maar dan mis je het donkere groen van die bosjes in de voorgrond, dus Prima Foto.

Fabulous too the way you have allowed the hills to fill the frame: one can feel their power this way

Hi Niek,
This a landscape for dreaming! What a superb light you captured, here! I like much these atmosphere when the light crosses the heavy clouds to illuminate the countryside. Excellent composition showing the vastness and the loneliness of this abandoned farm. Many connotations in this beautiful image! Bravo! Annie

Hello Niek ! What a wonderful composition, all those greens against the grey sky and the warm light on the buildings make it a very striking image ! Well done,

Mario

Hi Niek - What a superb impression of this sublime, green landscape of the Scottish Highlands with that tiny-looking farm building with two trees next to it. You chose well to set the horizon high. I guess 'Mr SunToucher' made the sun shed a few rays for this photograph :))) - TFS! Cordelia

Hoi Niek,

Ik kan je helaas niet helpen aan de informatie, maar ik wil je wel zeggen dat ik dit een hele gave foto vind. De boerderij en die twee bomen tegen die enorme groene heuvels, het is echt prachtig. Heel mooi gedaan!

Hi Niek,
amazing landscape.. I am also amazed that we only see 2 pine trees... Love the details on the hill.. we can see the rain groves (lack of the real terminology sorry) Wish I could help you out with the information you ask..

Tricia

Just amazing detail here Niek! Oh how I would LOVE to run up to the house for some shots! Could you do that?? Or was it fenced off! I'm am a terrible trespasser...just to get the shot and then I'm gone! Superb colors! I would LOVE to live here! except...what happens when the rains come heavy?? looks like the house is in a bad place?

I found this:
Country Diary: Coignafearn
There are many reasons why this part of Strathdearn is so fascinating. The river Findhorn is the dominant feature and, as I stood on the north bank last week, I thought of the salmon that had already passed upstream to spawn. The hillsides were still covered with snow and the group of hinds high on the upper slopes were conspicuous even from a distance. In this strath you can see roe, sika and red deer all in the same view, but this is more than matched by much smaller mammals. This is one of the very few areas in the Highlands where you can see rabbits, brown hares and mountain hares in the same small area of grassland. It only happens when there is sufficient snow to force the mountain hares away from their beloved heather and down to the fields.

There are tribes of wild goats and I saw two nannies browsing on tender juniper shoots - one black and white, and the other pure white. The first of the oystercatchers had arrived and five of them flew downstream calling loudly as if they were pleased to be back from their winter haunts.

Away from the noise of the river, the silence is almost measurable as if it envelops the mind completely.

Then there are the old settlements and there are far more ruinous structures than occupied ones. Some of the names begin with Coig, which means a fifth, and one of the houses, called Coignafeuinternich, is reputed to be the longest, at 18 letters, single place name in Scotland. Compared with today, the strath would have been well-populated and a completely different world, and to survive in such a remote area would have been difficult.

Hello Niek,
This is a very fine composition, withe the green hills and the small houses humbly in front..!
The varied light is important for this image, and the two trees are eye-catchers...
A lonely atmosphere has been well conveyed, and this is only one of thousands of similar farms abandoned each year...
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Niek,
Amazing work - the colours look very 'true'. impressive effort :-)
Best regards, Daniel.

Don't know how i missed this one out. What a superb capture capture. Love the mood created by this natural light. A spectacular view. Well done.

I really like this shot Niek! It tells a story, has impact (contrast in scale, and wonderful composition) It is very well executed. I LOVE the two trees. One has to wonder if ever there were more trees in the highlands once upon a time. You captured the bleakness and the bareness and yet the green feels hopeful. Great work and good eye!

Hello Niek !

A brilliant composition to show us the wild wild Scotland. The impressionism here is beautiful, with the farm buildings in the spotlight as the sunrays were piercing the cloudy sky .

Lovely contrasts sky vs ground, colors and light balance.
Bravo!
