Just went through some of my Christmas shots to see if there was something I could add to this weeks theme.

This was a little bit of an experimental shot, I took several from the same spot, playing about with ISO's and apertures as well as the ND4 filter.

The path you can see runs alongside the River Tweed, one of Scotland's great salmon rivers. The town crest shows three fish, one swimming upstream and two swimming down - symbolizing salmon spawning.

Not really too much else to say here!

ISO 200, 13 second exposure, f4, tripod used

Hi Richard,

Nice "night" shot, I like the pov here, great sharpness and details, look like the rain is coming? (or was) Great composition, the paving is leading my eyes to the end till I see a bridge, so clear, well captured

Cheers,
Sweety

You have done an awesome job of capturing the mood here Richard. I love the exposure on the sky and the trees. Love the reflections and I guess love it all. Super POV and the clarity is amazing. Love it. Great contribution to the theme.

Warm Regards
Wanda
PS looking to tour Scotland in March. Crossing fingers.

Looks as if the sky is going to open up and pour out rain! Nice details here Richard, with a bit of light remaining in the day! Very nice work in a low light situation! Nice off center perspective too!

Ready for a non praiseful comment Richard? :-)
(actually is "praiseful" a word in english, I couldn't find it in my Harrap's shorter)
Back to the picture and straight to the main problem; it lack of contrast. It's a quite interesting night shot with a lot of details and texture but it's all gray and dull. Check the histogram of this picture; all is centered in the middle, meaning there's no true black and no true white and so missing a lot of dynamic in the shade of gray. It looked underexposed. A simple level adjustment would have fixed that; bring the white and black slider to the edge of the histogram would have expand the range of shade of gray from pure white to pure black. Then with mid-ton slider (also called gamma slider) you would have been able to control how dark or bright you wanted the picture without affecting the range of shade of gray.
If it wasn't for this dull looking lack of contrast, this picture would have good.

I've done a workshop. Actually I did two workshop.

I envy you your ability to capture night scenes. My little Nikon Coolpix was not designed to be propped up on a big tripod (that would certainly provide my wife with some amusement). Very sharp and clean

Best regards
RG

Hi Richard.

Compositionally, I like it a lot. The path provides an excellent lead-in to the scene. The trees to the left provide a great boundary / frame and the Tweed (a beautiful river in any light) provides some really good reflections.

However, despite great tones in the clouds and not a hint of burn-out from the lamps (good use of an ND filter) the image is all mid-tones and lacks a bit of punch.

Overall a really nice shot with the potential to offer more.

Regards, Paul.

Hi Richard The long time exposure resulted in a soft mood image. My first reaction would be to have used a mid range f stop - 7 or 8. Resulted in much longer time. Need to get my self out and try some experiments.

Hi Rich.

this comes across as a very smooth clean image good composition...and to me It just looks like you are there....indeed a good shot....

ps yes..... in response to your observation from a long way away.....the scare at Anfield.......haha I'm a Blue.......was hangin from the ceiling......haha

I Like the composition but i think is lacking of contrast here. Thanks for sharing, regards, Jean.

Richard I studied this and then the 2 WS, although they are well done, i think they change the mood of the photo you took, I like the overall cast in this photo, whereas the WS draw you attention to certain aspects yours reamins neutral.
Nicely done

Morning Richard

well what a stunner! no not you the image lol. I never expected anyone to post a night style shot to the B.W theme. the effect is just superb. I love the lead through with the path and the water and the image has good sharpness. The lighting is excellent. Overall I think this image is a total success my friend. Well done and thanks for joining in the theme

Kind regards Helen

I was about to do a workshop, only I see that somebody beat me to it.
It is indeed nice and sharp and the composition works very well. But it would be just a touch better if it were slightly more contrasty.
A very fine posting all the same
Cheers
