[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a picture of "Swayling" (the act of burning Gorse and/or Heather) on Dartmoor, this was taken from Saddle Tor and the Swayling was taking place just below Haytor.
Swayling takes place to stop the Gorse or as it gets called in Devon Fuzz or Fuzzbush from taking over, this allows new grass to grow, only certain areas are Swayled each year, the following year another area will be done so as not to destroy the habitat for bird, snakes and rodents etc.

Very nice "fire" for today.. I like that we see the nice green landscape then the fire and then behind the charred land...
is Swayling only for grouse / heather? IMHO its us humans needed to take control over EVERYTHING! :)

Hello Andy,

I find this very interesting. I wonder if swayling is a dialect word. We call it swithering and it is used to regenerate the plant growth on the moors. It causes the regrowth of the heather.


It is good to see fire creating a useful end rather than just destroying! A really good contribution to the theme.

We call it a burn-off when they set fires for 'real' reasons!! And hope that it works and doesn't get out of hand.
We drove around dartmoor on the way to Cornwall in 1999. It's a well-known historical place name.

This reminds me of the burning of the rice "fields" here in Northern California. Fire is usefull when used properly. Nice addition to the Friday Theme.

Hello Andy,
we were walking on Dartmoor just last week and saw the results of the burning.In Yorkshire we call it 'sweeling'.
Your shot is a good alternative yet totally apt shot for the theme.A good composition with the different layers,and the flames running through the centre.
Good natural colours.
