This is a Gannet (Morus bassanus), it is another shot taken on my recent trip to Lundy Island, this was taken from the boat (MV Oldenburg) that sails from Bideford to the Island.

My thanks to you for you time to view/critique this picture.

Latin name
Morus bassanus

Family
Boobies and gannets (Sulidae)

Overview
Adults are large and bright white with black wingtips. They are distinctively shaped with a long neck and long pointed beak, long pointed tail, and long pointed wings. At sea they flap and then glide low over the water, often travelling in small groups. They feed by flying high and circling before plunging into the sea. It breeds in significant numbers at only a few localities and so is an Amber List species.

Where to see them
Biggest mainland breeding colony at RSPB's Bempton Cliffs. Two mainland colonies - at Bempton and Troup Head, Scotland. Big island colonies on St Kilda, the Northern Isles and Bass Rock in Scotland and Grassholm in Wales. Can be seen offshore almost anywhere, especially in when they migrate south in August and September.

When to see them
They arrive at their colonies from January onwards and leave in August and September. Non-breeding birds can be seen at any time around the coasts and the main migration period offshore is during the autumn.

What they eat
Fish

Hiya Andy

Well my friend this is absolutely beautiful, wonderful angle for the shot, excellent DOF and colour.. if I might just make one suggestion though, I feel the crop is too tight here. I am always harping on about animals having the space to move within a frame and I feel he/she looks like those wing tips might just be a touch cramped. Aside from that its a stunning shot and I love the gradutated lighting too.

TFS kind regards Helen

hi andy,
excellent, excellent, excellent!

what more can i say?
Brian

Hi Andy,
Spot on, I do agree with Helen though, maybe just a fraction too tight on the crop but it would only need very slightly extending to leave just a fraction of space at the end of the wing tips. However, who am I to criticise, the clarity and detail is just superb.
Best regards,
Les

You just about got him in the frame, great composition to this, dramatic and quite stunning.

regards h

Superb, just superb!
Can't get any better (well i am sure it can) :), so good luck with your next shots.

This one is so great. i love the way you've presented it here, diagonal, yet not centered. The wings' tips are slightly cut, but it's a minor.

Just got 40D today...so hoping to get some good shots like this one :)

Hi Andy
I see other have mentioned the tight crop.. but besides that the focus on his face is amazing.. I love the light coming from the left and lighting his tail feathers!
I have a hard enough time getting a shot in focus with a stationary brid!

Hi Andy

Very good shot with superb detail.
I know how hard it is to capture a bird in flight and in focus.
You have done very well here.
