This is another shot taken at the raptor display at the local wetlands centre. I believe this is a Gyr.

Info from the Hawk Conservancy Trust website:

Formerly known in parts of the United Kingdom as jer-falcon, gerfalcon, Greenland falcon and Iceland Falcon this most northerly of all the falcons, the Gyrfalcon lives in arctic Europe, Asia, North America, Greenland and Iceland.

Some migrate southwards for the depth of winter, but never further the the northern US or central Russia..
Its preferred terrain is invariably open country, mountains or tundra.

The Gyrfalcon is the largest and most magnificent of the falco genus. In the most northerly part of its range is is almost uniformly white, becoming darker as it moves further south. With a wingspan of up to 63' (160 cm) and a body weight of up to 4.6 lb (2.1kg) it is indeed an impressive and powerful bird.
Being a resident of some of the most inaccessible parts of the earth, this bird is at very little risk from man and his planetary vandalism - there has never been very much incidence of pesticide residue, for instance. They have, since medieval times, been very much prized by falconers, but the numbers taken from the wild have never been enough to threaten the long-term stability of the species. As is to be expected with a bird of this size, however, and given the nature of its preferred habitat, it is never a numerous bird, peaking at perhaps 200 in Iceland in good years, dropping by perhaps 70%-80% during lean years.

Beautiful portrait, a magnificent creature indeed. And it is pleasant to know that there still are some species we did not yet affected in our struggle to make Asimov 's dark prophecy of only five or six surviving species come true.
